Point Volleyball drops two on the road

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (Oct. 19, 2024) - The Point University Volleyball team returned to the court for road Southern States Athletic Conference matchups against Loyola University-New Orleans and William Carey University where the Skyhawks fell to the Wolfpack in a sweep. Point looked to gain momentum the following day against the Crusaders but fell in four sets. 

Friday vs. Loyola (3-0, Loss) 

The Skyhawks looked to match the intensity through the first set as Point went on an 11-3 run to cut in the Wolfpack lead with a score of 17-16. Loyola would gain the upper hand with multiple kills while capitalizing on Point's errors. The momentum for the Wolfpack carried into set two as Loyola went on multiple runs, including an 8-3 run to hold the Skyhawks to less than 20 points and win set two with a final score of 25-18. Set three saw both opponents trade consecutive scores through the first 15 points of play. Angel Johnson and Jasmyn Ceasar looked to help add a late comeback with back-to-back kills, bringing the score to 24-20. As Point looked to make a run, the defensive effort with a solo block from the Wolfpack ended the match in a sweep. Jasmyn Ceasar and Ava Clay led with seven kills on the evening. 

Saturday vs. William Carey (3-1, Loss) 

The Skyhawks looked to increase their offensive approach in the first set as Claire Cordell opened with a kill. As both teams started trading scores, a block from Tianna Kynard and Jasmyn Ceasar helped add a 4-0 run for Point to regain the lead. The Crusaders charged their way back into the lead as their offense woke up with three consecutive kills. The Skyhawks continued to stay the course, with Point adding two back-to-back assisted blocks to trail 22-21. William Carey responded with two kills, capitalizing on an attack error to take set one. Point came into set two looking to find their rhythm, which was displayed with a 6-0 run to tie the set at 16-16. Claire Cordell and Jasmyn Ceasar continued to make their opportunities count with attacks that could not be defended to take the lead by two. William Carey responded with their offense, adding kills and Point adding an attack error to drop set two to the Crusaders. Point did not go away in set three as Claire Cordell and Jasmyn Ceasar led the way with multiple kills, which made the Crusaders look for answers. Angel Johnson entered the fray to put William Carey on their heels, and Claire Cordell followed with the final kill of set three to keep the Skyhawks alive in the match. Point jumped to a 10-4 lead in set four before the Crusaders went on an 8-0 run to lead 12-10. The Skyhawks regained the lead with Paige Lowe and Claire Cordell adding back-to-back scores for Point. The Crusaders halted Point to 21 points through each set and won the match in four. Claire Cordell led with a season-high 17 kills, adding nine digs and one service ace. Paige Lowe led with 39 assists and 23 digs with one service ace. Jasmyn Ceasar followed with 11 kills, seven digs, and one block.
