Point Volleyball goes 1-1 in home weekend SSAC Play

WEST POINT, Ga. (Oct. 5, 2024) - The Point University Volleyball team returned to the court for Southern States Athletic Conference matches against the University of Tennessee-Southern and Blue Mountain Christian University. The Skyhawks were able to cool off the Firehawks in a Friday sweep but would fall to the Toppers the following day in a sweep. 

Friday vs. UT Southern (3-0, Win) 

To open the Match, both opponents opened Set One trading back-to-back scores. The Skyhawks took a 9-3 run as Claire Cordell and Tianna Kynard added consecutive kills to push their lead to 17-13. As the Firehawks looked to climb back, Point held off UT Southern from regaining the lead to take the first set with a final score of 25-21. The Skyhawks continued their momentum into set two as Point opened with a 12-4 lead with multiple kills from Jasmyn Ceasar and Claire Cordell. As the Firehawks looked to respond with their run, Point continued to hold their lead to take a two-set lead. The errors from UT Southern and the firepower from Point proved to be too much for the Firehawks as the Skyhawks surged past UT Southern for the Sweep. Claire Cordell led with 15 kills and Jasmyn Ceasar followed with 10. 

Saturday vs. Blue Mountain Christian University (3-0, Loss) 

The Skyhawks looked to bring the intensity in Set One as Tianna Kynard and Claire Cordell were in the right place at the right time for the assisted block. A kill from Kynard and Jasmyn Ceasar was enough to tie the early beginnings at 12 a piece. The Toppers followed with a 7-1 lead to jump ahead with a 21-15 lead but the Skyhawks looked to stay in it as Claire Cordell and Angel Johnson added kills to trail by three. Blue Mountain would allow just two more scores before taking the first set. Point looked to regain momentum in the second set with Kayla Johnson and Tianna Kynard adding kills to trail 12-8. Blue Mountain followed with an 8-1 run to extend their lead to 21-10. Three errors from the Toppers and a kill from Angel Johnson added four consecutive scores for the Skyhawks. Blue Mountain halted Point's run to score the next four scores to take the second set. Point jumped ahead with a 3-1 lead in the third set followed by a kill from Jasmyn Ceasar to extend the lead. Blue Mountain followed with an 11-2 run to jump ahead and regain the momentum. Point was held to just 17 points in the third set to fall to the Toppers in a sweep.
