
Point Volleyball splits on Day Two of the Talladega College Tournament
TALLADEGA, Ala. (Aug. 31, 2024) - The Point University Volleyball team returned to the court for the Talladega College Tournament where the Skyhawks took on Johnson University and Talladega College. Point fell to the Royals in a sweep but bounced back in dominating fashion over the Tornadoes.
Day Two: vs. Johnson University (25-22, 25-20, 25-27, Loss)
In the first set, The Skyhawks opened with a 4-0 lead, with Johnson adding three attack errors. Johnson would strike back resulting in both opponents trading back-and-forth scores through the first 18 points. The Royals added the following three scores to lead by three. Jasmyn Ceasar and Ava Clay followed with consecutive kills to keep the set alive but a service error on the Skyhawks ended the set with Johnson winning 25-22. The Royals carried the momentum into the second set by capitalizing on Point's errors and adding consistency on the offensive end. The Skyhawks looked to climb back with two consecutive service aces from Emily Calhoun and a kill from Tianna Kynard. With Johnson leading 18-17, The Royals added the following six scores while only giving up two points to take the second set. Johnson's firepower proved to be a tale for the match as the Royals took set three for the sweep.
Day Two: vs. Talladega College (25-23, 25-23, 25-18, Win)
Point jumped into set one on a mission as Abigail Hardwick and Jasmyn Ceasar got the evening started with multiple kills to lead 8-3. The Skyhawks continued to give the Tornadoes a tough time as Tianna Kynard and Kayla Johnson were in the right spot for the assisted block. Lexi Arter followed by continuing the record books with a service ace to bring Point's lead to 15-9. Kills from Angel Johnson and Kayla Johnson helped extend the lead in the first set. Talladega followed with a 6-0 run to tie the set at 18 a piece but an attack error helped Point regain the lead. Talladega took their first lead with two consecutive kills with hopes of wiping the momentum away from Point. The Skyhawks fired back in dominating fashion as the final four scores came from kills by Kayla Johnson, Angel Johnson, and Abigail Hardwick. The Skyhawks entered the second set by trading scores with the Tornadoes through the first 10 points. Jasmyn Ceasar, Angel Johnson, and Ava Clay's kills helped the Skyhawks bring their lead to 19-13. Talladega made a run similar to the first set but Point would not let their foot off the gas. Kayla Johnson and Abigail Hardwick finished set two with consecutive kills to bring the final score to 25-23. Talladega came into set three with intentions of extending the match and got off to a good start with a 13-11 lead. Point responded with their versatility of Jasmyn Ceasar adding multiple kills and Claire Cordell adding a service ace. Attack errors from Talladega and kills from Angel Johnson proved to be too much for the Tornadoes as the Skyhawks swept Talladega to go 3-1 overall in the Talladega College Tournament. Jasmyn Ceasar led with 11 kills followed by Angel Johnson contributing with 10 kills in the sweep.
