Skyhawks suffer Sweep to Bluefield

WEST POINT, Ga. (Sept. 17, 2022) - The Point University volleyball team opened their Saturday morning in an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup against Bluefield College and fell to the Rams 3-0.

Play by Play (25-23, 25-20, 25-22)

The match started off with both teams not letting their respective opponents get the upper edge as both teams traded points back and forth. The constant battle for momentum saw both teams tied at 11, and the Skyhawks nabbed six quick points after a few attack errors from Bluefield along with the offensive firepower from Point. With the Skyhawks inching for the game point, the Rams showed resilience to go from being down 18-21 to make the game a tie. Both teams quickly turned the heat by attacking the net, but Bluefield would prevail in the first set by getting the last two kills.

The second set quickly started for the Rams as they jumped in front with an 8-3 lead after a few kills from a few attack errors from the Skyhawks and the Rams attacking the net with full force. Point brought the deficit within two points after a kill from Sameily Marquez and two errors from Bluefield. Both teams traded runs as the Rams struck first with a 4-1 run to move the lead back to four, and the Skyhawks came back with a 5-1 lead to bring the score to 13-12. From there, Bluefield capitalized off their opponents' mistakes to bring the lead back to four. The Skyhawks looked to come out of their timeout with a way to freeze Bluefield to bring the game within reach, but the Rams stood tall to take the set 25-20.

Point looked to avoid a sweep in the third set and would start the set with everything in their favor as Sarah Baucham's kill advanced their lead to 10-5 before a quick timeout from Bluefield. The Rams continued to look for answers for Point's offensive firepower and would find their answer as Point's lead was cut to two points after two consecutive errors on their end. After the timeout by Point, the Skyhawks went on a 4-1 run to advance the score 20-16. Bluefield would not let the cold start hold them back as they made their way back into the game and were now trailing by one after a service ace along with an attack error from the Point. The Rams fed off the momentum by upping the ante on offense to take the lead and only allowed one more point from the Skyhawks to end the set 25-22.
