Volleyball’s season ends in quarterfinal round of AAC tournament

KINGSPORT, Tenn. (Nov. 11, 2021) – The No. 7 seed Point University volleyball team looked to upset the No. 2 seed CIU Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament, but the Skyhawks' efforts came up short as CIU defeated Point in three sets (25-10, 25-22, 25-8).

The Skyhawks conclude the 2021 season with a record of 14-16 (10-10 AAC).

CIU opened the match by scoring the first two points, but the Skyhawks cut their lead back down to one with a kill from Sameily Marquez to make the score 5-4. This, however, would be as close as Point would come as CIU followed by scoring the following eight points and extended its lead out by 10 or more for the remainder of the set.

In the second set, Point used a 7-0 run, sparked by a kill from Marquez, to take a 9-5 lead. Point held onto its lead, extending it out 17-15 before the Rams retook it with a 4-0 run. CIU took advantage of three Skyhawk attack errors to regain the lead. Kills from Marquez and Baucham and an attack error by CIU would help the Skyhawks tie the set three separate times, but Point could not regain the lead and the Rams took a 2-0 match lead.

Despite an early 2-1 lead from Point, coming from a kill by Marquez, the third set was all CIU as the Rams limited Point to only eight points.

The Rams outkilled Point 38-21, finishing with a .310 hitting percentage, and took advantage of 25 attack errors compared to CIU's 11.

Marquez led Point with 10 kills, Abby Solomon had 10 assists and Whitney Ward had 14 digs.
