Several career highs help Skyhawks over Union

WEST POINT, Ga. (Oct. 30, 2020) – Three Skyhawks registered career highs Friday night and helped lead the Point University volleyball team to a four set victory, 25-14, 17-25, 25-22, 25-21 over Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Union College inside West Point Gym.

Along with having career highs on the night, Te'a Owens and Kaitlyn Hawke each recorded their third double-doubles of the season. Owens had a career-high of 17 kills and added 15 digs, while Hawke had a career-high of 47 assists and added 16 digs to lead Point's defensive efforts, alongside Madison Bentley who also had 16 digs.

Autumn Hill also had a career-high with 10 kills to round out the Skyhawks who were in the double-digit column for kills. Sarah Baucham was the third Skyhawk with 11 kills.

Point and Union kept the score tight the first half of the opening set before a kill by Mary Rimmer sent the Skyhawks on a 13-1 run to finish set one. Seven kills accounted for the 13 points, with Owens and Hill recording three each.

In set two, Union steadily worked their way out, going on a 6-1 run to jump ahead 16-10. The Bulldogs would keep a comfortable lead the rest of the set and pick up the victory in set two, to tie the match up at 1-1.

The third set was close as well, with 28 ties and seven lead changes. The score was tied at 21 before Point closed out the set going on a 4-1 run with three of those points coming off of kills by Owens. Twenty of Point's 25 points were off kills in set three as the Skyhawks had their best hitting percentage in set three with a .314.

Point carried the momentum from set three into set four, and the Skyhawks were able to put the match away in four.

"We talked all week about bringing fight," Head Coach Joe Herrera said. "All 25 players brought the fight tonight. I hope we keep this momentum going into next game and throughout the rest of the season."

After Friday's game, the Skyhawks are 4-4 on the season and are only 3.5 games back out of first place in the AAC South Division. Point will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 31, for another AAC matchup at home against Kentucky Christian. Game time is set for 11 a.m.
