Point beats St. Andrews in four

WEST POINT, Ga. (Oct. 23, 2020) – Te'a Owens and Kaitlyn Hawke recorded their second double-doubles of the season and the Point University volleyball team defeated St. Andrews University, 28-26, 29-17, 18-25, 25-22, in Appalachian Athletic Conference play Friday night in West Point Park Gymnasium.

Set-by-set

The first two sets went past regulation ending as the Skyhawks and the Knights battled it out to the final point. In set one, St. Andrews led 24-22 before Point fought back to tie the set at 24. Tied at 26, back-to-back kills by Mollie Goen and Hawke gave the Skyhawks the two point lead they needed to open the match with a set one win.

In set two, Point took a quick 14-8 lead before the Knights went on a 7-3 run to only trail by two before tying the score at 22. Both teams battled it out the rest of the set before an Owens' kill and a St. Andrews attack error gave the Skyhawks the set victory and a 2-0 lead.

The score remained close in set three, with both teams tied at 15 before the Knights went on an 8-2 run to jump ahead 23-17. The Skyhawks were unable to fight back and St. Andrews picked up the victory in set three, but that was the only victory the Skyhawks would allow as Point never allowed the Knights in the lead in set four. The Skyhawks were able to extend their lead by eight in set four before St. Andrews went on an 8-2 run to only trail by one. The Skyhawks were able to take advantage of two St. Andrews' attack errors, the latter coming off a block by Goen and Mary Rimmer, to secure the Skyhawks' match victory.

By the numbers

The Skyhawks were led by Owens, who had a game-high of 13 kills, adding on a team-high of 15 digs and Hawke who recorded 31 assists and 12 digs. Sarah Baucham and Goen tallied 10 kills apiece and Madison Bentley and Audrey Blaschke helped the defensive front with 13 digs each. Blaschke nearly clinched a double-double of her own with nine assists on the night.

"After being off for two weeks, we were able to execute when we needed to, but I want us to execute more consistently," Head Coach Joe Herrera said. "We missed way too many serves, but overall, the girls played well and they fought for the win."

Up next

With tonight's win, the Skyhawks move to 2-3 on the season. Point will play again tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 24, in another AAC matchup at home against Columbia College at 11 a.m. The Skyhawks will be looking to get the series sweep as they defeated Columbia earlier this season on Sept. 25.
