Battle of I-85, ends in a tie for women’s soccer at home

WEST POINT, Ga. (September 23, 2023) – The Point University Women's Soccer team returned to the pitch at the River Bowl Stadium for an afternoon Southern States Athletic Conference matchup against I-85 rival Faulkner University (AL). The Skyhawks and Eagles would end in a 1-1 tie.  

The women's soccer match between Faulkner University and Point University kicked off with high energy as both teams vied for control. Point University's goalkeeper, Kelly Rowland, made an early save at 5:07 when Faulkner's Alyssa Bennett fired a shot. Faulkner earned a corner kick at 11:16, but it didn't translate into a scoring opportunity. However, at 14:55, Faulkner executed a well-crafted play that led to the opening goal. Elodie Metho capitalized on an assist by Ainsley Lockwood, propelling her team into a 1-0 lead. Point University had their chances, including Lauren Grant's attempt at 21:02, which soared high, and Alyssa Bennett's shot at 25:44, missing wide left. A yellow card was shown to Point's Morgan Pent at 30:48.  

The second half witnessed both teams fervently pursuing goals. Faulkner defended their lead tenaciously, while Point University sought to level the score. Their efforts bore fruit at 70:16 when Point University successfully equalized. Lizvet Chirinos found the net, courtesy of an assist by Cassidy Harrell, resulting in a 1-1 scoreline. Stellar defensive plays and crucial goalkeeper saves characterized the action throughout the game. Faith Rush for Faulkner and Kelly Rowland for Point University made pivotal saves. Faulkner relentlessly pressed forward, accumulating 20 shots, with four on target. Point University displayed resilience and determination, managing nine shots with one finding the target. Despite numerous attempts by both sides, the match concluded in a hard-fought 1-1 tie, with each team earning a point in this closely contested battle.

Kelly Rowland would make 10 saves as the starting goalkeeper for Point. Lizvet Chirinos scored the tying goal for the Skyhawks, which helped wipe Faulkner's lead away.

The Skyhawks will focus on Tennessee Southern as Point will take the road on Thursday, September 28th. They will head to Pulaski, Tenn., for the 5:00 P.M. matchup.
