Women’s soccer defeats Union for fourth straight victory

WEST POINT, Ga. (Oct. 24, 2021) – The Point University women's soccer team had three players score goals Sunday afternoon, as the Skyhawks rolled past the Bulldogs of Union College 3-1 in an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup inside River Bowl Stadium.

The win marked Point's fourth consecutive victory and advanced the Skyhawks to an overall record of 8-7-1 (8-3-1 AAC).

"It's been a long week, but we're happy to get the three wins," Head Coach Randy Douglas said. "The shutout streak, unfortunately, came to an end, but we played so well at the beginning of both halves that it was only a small disappointment. Keiry had an outstanding game and the defense played well enough. Glad for Carmen to get one to ultimately seal the win and allow us to utilize our bench."

Early scoring gives Skyhawks momentum

Marissa Amaya helped the Skyhawks take an early lead, scoring the game's first goal in the third minute of play. Carmen Kager got the action started with a corner kick that was placed inside the box. Kelly Carlisle and Jasmine Mathis both tried to take shot attempts, but the Bulldogs' defense stopped both goal attempts before Amaya was able to connect with the back of the net.

Five minutes later, Keiry Bonilla extended Point's lead with an assist from Kager. Point entered the second half leading 2-0. Point outshot Union 18-1 in the first half.

Second half

Kager cushioned Point's lead in the 68th minute, sending the ball into the net from the top of the box to help Point take a 3-0 lead. A Point foul in the penalty box would set Union up for a penalty kick in the 80th minute, which would lead to the Bulldogs' only goal of the day. Union's goal is only the third goal that has been scored on the Skyhawks in the month of October.

Point outshot Union 15-2 in the second half.

In the box

Overall, the Skyhawks took 33 shots, 22 on goal, and limited Union to three shots. The Skyhawks forced Union goalkeeper Madison Hebert to make 13 saves.

Carlisle, Vanessa Lara and Kager led Point's shot attempts with nine, seven and five shots, respectively.
