Women’s Basketball halts Faulkner in the Battle of I-85 Matchup

WEST POINT, Ga. (Feb. 17, 2024) - The Point University Women's Basketball team returned to the court for a home Southern States Athletic Conference matchup against Faulkner University where the Skyhawks soared past Faulkner for the win with a final score of 83-63.

The Skyhawks jumped on the scoreboard with a three-pointer from Antonia Pittman to respond to the first score from Faulkner. The Skyhawks continued their fiery start from behind the arc as Destinee Ellison and Mirial Cannon splashed back-to-back triples to lead 9-8. As both teams continued to settle in the game, Shakira Wilson got her afternoon going with a three-pointer and jump shot to regain the lead with a score of 16-15. Point's shooting was the tale of the first quarter as the ball movement of the Skyhawks saw Lanee Edwards knock down a deep two-pointer. The end of the quarter woke up the gym with Shakira Wilson splashing a nothing-but-net three-pointer to lead 21-15 to go into the second quarter.

As Faulkner started the second period with a jumper, Destinee Ellison sized her opponent up for the mid-range jumper to continue the consistent shooting from Point. Shakira Wilson continued to give the Eagles problems on defense as she scored the following seven points to keep Point in the lead with a 30-24 score. The momentum would not stop there as Wilson proved to be more than a three-point shooter as she breezed past defenders for layups and mid-range jumpers. As the Skyhawks led 43-34 at the 1:10 mark, Coach Tory Wooley wanted his team to finish the half strong which was positively put on display. The Skyhawks did not allow another score from Faulkner and added two more scores that came from Shakira Wilson and Destinee Ellison to bring the score to 43-34 at the half.

Point's lead jumped to 10 as Ky'Leo Worriels on her defender for the strong layup. Ananda Hughley helped keep the Skyhawks in the lead as she added a layup which was followed by a three-pointer in the corner. Point's offense was able to stay the course with Shakira Wilson following with another triple and a jumper from Lanee Edwards to lead 61-50 to go into the fourth quarter. The Skyhawks were able to handle the press defense from Faulkner in the final period which helped their momentum bring their lead to 71-55. The Eagles looked to slow the game down with fouls but the consistent free throws ended the game with a final score 83-63.

Coach's Quote

Head Coach Tory Wooley was pleased with his team adding their second consecutive win in conference play along with how they brought the energy. "I thought our team played with great synergy and were connected on both sides of the ball. Our ladies are sharing the ball and focused on their defensive assignments.
We got huge contributions from everyone. Shakira Wilson played great and her teammates did an outstanding job finding her when she was hot. We did an outstanding job rebounding the ball and our help defense was superb today.
Overall, this was a great team win and we have to continue to thread in the right direction."
