Women’s Basketball soars past the Nighthawks for the road SSAC Win

THOMASVILLE, Ga. (Dec. 16, 2023) - The Point University Women's Basketball team returned to the court for a Saturday afternoon Southern States Athletic Conference play against in-state foe, Thomas University where the Skyhawks took the win 67-44. 

The first quarter began with Mataea Boyd scoring the first five points as she converted on the layup followed by a three-pointer. Mirial Cannon added to the lead with a layup in the paint before the Nighthawks took a timeout. Mataea Boyd and Antonia Pittman continued to add pressure to the paint as Thomas could not find answers in the early going to stop the scoring. Boyd's hot start continued as she pushed Point's lead to seven with her second three-pointer to lead 14-7. Destinee Ellison entered the fray with a smooth jump shot to extend the lead for the Skyhawks as Point ended the first quarter leading 17-10. 

The second quarter continued to show the Skyhawks putting their game plan on display. The run started with Ky'Leo Worriels knocking down the three-pointer which was followed by layups from Antonia Pittman and Mirial Cannon. The run continued with the Skyhawks going on a 15-5 run with the Point leading 41-17 at the half while only allowing seven points in the second quarter.  

Antonia Pittman and Mataea Boyd got the third quarter going with the first three layups to lead 47-20. After the Nighthawks got on the scoreboard with a response, Mirial Cannon added the following two scores with one coming in the paint and the next shot being at the mid-range. Point's fast offense was shown as Shanbriah Rule connected with Antonia Pittman for the fastbreak layup. Shakira Wilson would finish the quarter for the Skyhawks with the final layup as Point led 56-28 to go into the final period of play. 

The fourth quarter began with the Nighthawks jumping on the scoreboard with a layup. The Skyhawks retaliated with a three-pointer from Shakira Wilson which was followed by a layup to bring the lead to 61-30. Ananda Hughley added a three-pointer to help extend Point's lead. Hughley added a free throw which was followed by a layup from Jada Williams to score the final baskets of the game as the Skyhawks cruised to a 67-44 win over the Nighthawks. 

In the Box 

Mirial Cannon led with 16 Points, five rebounds, and one assist. Mataea Boyd added 15 Points, six rebounds, four steals, and one block. Ky'Leo Worriels and Antonia Pittman each contributed 10 Points Worriels also added 15 rebounds for a double-double. Pittman added four rebounds and one steal.

The Skyhawks will take a quick trip to Columbus, Georgia for an exhibition matchup against NCAA Division II, Columbus State University on Saturday, December 30th for the final game of 2023.
