Women’s Basketball takes down Lagrange in the Battle of Troup County

LAGRANGE, Ga. (Dec. 6, 2023) - The Point University Women's Basketball returned to the court for a non-conference game against a cross-town rival which was NCAA Division III Opponent, Lagrange College in a Wednesday night Battle of Troup County game where the Skyhawks held on to win 66-60. 

Antonia Pittman got the matchup started in the first quarter with a three-pointer to take the early 3-0 lead. Lagrange did not take long to respond with a triple of their own and added to it with a follow-up three-pointer to lead 6-3. Point retaliated as Mataea Boyd drove to the basket for her signature strong and-one layup and converted the free throw to tie the game. The Skyhawks' offense continued to make their trips successful as Mirial Cannon scored the following three baskets with two in the paint and the following basket as a three-pointer. Point kept hold of their lead Antonia Pittman pushed the lead to 15-9 but the Panthers kept the game close as Lagrange made the following free throw and layup to trail 15-12 at the end of the first quarter.  

The second quarter began with Shakira Wilson letting the quick release fly for made three-pointer. The Skyhawks scored the following six points as Wilson made two free throws, Antonia Pittman scored on a layup and Mirial Cannon added a layup as well to lead 24-16. The Skyhawks kept their run going as Antonia Pittman continued to cause trouble for the Lagrange defense with a three-point bomb. The Panthers halted the Skyhawk 11-2 run by scoring on their following offensive possessions to cut Point's lead to 29-21. Mataea Boyd showed her deadeye three-point ability as she scored the following basket for Point to bring their lead back to double digits. As the Panthers responded by cutting the Skyhawks' lead to four, Ky'Leo Worriels and Mirial Cannon provided the final two baskets for Point in the first half to lead 36-28 at the break. 

Antonia Pittman started the third quarter with a three-pointer to extend Point's lead to 39-32 and the Panthers followed by catching their rhythm. Lagrange added a quick 8-0 run to tie the game at 40 but the Skyhawks regained the lead as Shanbriah Rule made two free throws and Mirial Cannon continued to dominate the paint with another layup. Lagrange continued to match the energy by tying the game again until Shakira Wilson touched the ball again for the quick-release triple to bring Point's lead to 47-44. Lagrange wiped the lead away with another three-pointer as both teams traded baskets until Shakira Wilson added another three-pointer followed by Shanbriah Rule going 1-for-2 from the charity stripe to lead 53-48 at the end of the third quarter. 

Ky'Leo Worriels started the fourth quarter with the first two layups to bring Point's lead to 57-50. The Panthers kept the game close as Lagrange brought the game within three points. A layup from Shanbriah Rule helped Point take the next score but with under two left in the game, the Panthers added the following two layups to make it a one-possession game. The Skyhawks continued to hold their lead as Mataea Boyd scored in the paint and Antonia Pittman went 1-for-2 at the free throw line. The Panthers responded by taking advantage of a foul to cut into Point's lead with a score of 63-60. The Skyhawks put the game on ice by scoring the following six points to win 66-60.

Antonia Pittman led with 18 Points, five assists, and two steals. Mirial Cannon added 15 Points, 11 Rebounds, and two blocks. Shakira Wilson contributed 11 Points off the bench while hitting crucial shots.  

Coach's Quote 

Head Coach Tory Wooley was pleased that his team prevailed to get the win against a scrappy team like Lagrange. "I couldn't be more proud of our ladies for their effort and finding a way to win against a scrappy Lagrange team. Lagrange will do great in their league and we look forward to continuing our "cross town" battle of Highway 29 rival." Wooley also mentioned a few key players that helped the Skyhawks earn the win along with looking ahead on how to grow throughout the season. "We had great contributions from Mirial Cannon and Antonia Pittman. We have to clean up a few things down the stretch and close out the game better but our players found a way to come out with a win against a good team."

The Skyhawks will continue their nonconference play as Point travels to Lakeland, Florida to take on Southeastern University in a nonconference road matchup on Saturday, December 9th starting at 2:00 P.M.
