Women’s Basketball unable to surge past #19 Loyola at home

WEST POINT, Ga. (Nov. 30, 2023) - The Point University Women's Basketball team returned to the court for a Thursday night matchup in Southern States Athletic Conference play against #19 Loyola University-New Orleans where the Skyhawks fell 81-65. 

The first quarter began with Antonia Pittman disrupting the passing lane for a fastbreak layup for the first score of the game. Loyola responded with an and-one layup and converted on the free throw from the charity stripe. The Skyhawks added two points as Mataea Boyd came up with a steal and converted on two free throws after the foul on the fast break. Point regained the lead with another score from Antonia Pittman and two free throws from Shakira Wilson to lead 8-5. The quarter continued with Point adding to their lead as Ky'Leo Worriels converted on the layup in the paint. The Wolfpack regained the lead with a three-pointer but Mataea Boyd tied the game at 13 as she responded with a layup. Loyola scored on another layup to lead by two to go into the second quarter. 

The action picked up for the second period as Point took the lead from a three-pointer from Shakira Wilson but the Wolfpack wiped the Skyhawks' lead away with a three-point response. -The Wolfpack added to this by ending the half on a 16-3 run to lead 36-23 at the break. Coming into the third quarter, Miral Cannon opened the scoring for Point as she responded to a three-pointer from the Wolfpack as Point trailed 39-25. Cannon helped end a quick 7-0 run from the Wolfpack as she added another score for the Skyhawks. Antonia Pittman continued to help keep the Skyhawks going as she scored her first three-pointer of the second half which was followed by a layup from Shanbriah Rule and Ky'Leo Worriels. Jada Williams entered the fray with a three-pointer and the Wolfpack finished the third period with a layup to lead 59-39 going into the final period. 
 

The Wolfpack started the fourth quarter by scoring the first three baskets before Mataea Boyd and Antonia Pittman gave Point their first score of the period. Pittman followed with back-to-back triples to bring the score to 69-50. Point continued to make shots as Mirial Cannon and Ananda Hughley added three-pointers. Lanee Edwards would add to this by scoring on a layup assisted by Antonia Pittman. Ananda Hughley followed with her second consecutive triple. Mirial Cannon and Antonia Pittman would score the final baskets for the Skyhawks as Point fell to the Wolfpack 81-65. 

In the Box 

Antonia Pittman led with 22 Points, seven assists and four steals. Mirial Cannon followed with nine points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Ananda Hughley and Mataea Boyd each added six points.

The Skyhawks will have a quick turnaround as Point takes on the University of Mobile for an SSAC Matchup on Saturday, December 2nd starting at noon.
