Women’s Basketball surges past the Bruins for their season opener

WEST POINT, Ga. (Oct. 26, 2023) - The Point University Women's Basketball team opened the 2023-24 Campaign against Carolina University at the West Point Park Gymnasium where the Skyhawks took the win 65-44. 

The first quarter started with both teams trading scores with hopes of taking the momentum to go on a run. Shanbriah Rule's three-pointer helped put the Skyhawks ahead by five but the Bruins scored a layup to bring the game to 9-6 with Point ahead. Two made free throws from Lanee Edwards and a layup from Ananda Hughley pushed the lead to 13-6. Carolina cut their deficit to three but made free throws from Antonia Pittman and a three-pointer from Lanee Edwards gave the Skyhawks an 18-14 lead going into the second quarter. 

Ky'Leo Worriels got the period started with a layup. Carolina University brought the game within three as the Bruins made a three-pointer but the attack to the paint paid dividends for Point as Mirial Cannon knocked down two shots from the charity stripe to bring the lead to 22-17. As the quarter continued, Mataea Boyd helped push Point's lead to nine as she scored the following two layups for Point. The lead increased to 11 with Mirial Cannon connecting on two made free throws. The Skyhawks continued to take advantage of each opportunity at the free throw line by knocking down the next three free throws and Antonia Pittman followed with a fastbreak layup to go into the half leading 33-20. 

Carolina University made their first three of the second half with hopes of cutting into the lead of Point but a made layup from Ky'Leo Worriels and a three from Mataea Boyd along with a layup from Boyd helped Point go on a 7-0 run. Lanee Edwards added to the run by scoring on a layup in the paint assisted by Mataea Boyd. Point's deep ball started to see more success as Antonia Pittman knocked down another three to add their biggest lead of the game which was 21. The quarter continued with the Skyhawks taking over as Ananada Hughley assisted Shanbriah Rule on the following score. Carolina University responded by bringing Point's lead to 19 but the third quarter finished with Point scoring on two layups from Ky'Leo Worriels and Shanbriah Rule.  

The Fourth Quarter continued to see the Skyhawks run the court as Ky'Leo Worriels used her strength in the paint to score on the following layup. The Bruins continued to fight their way for a spark on offense and found success on an and-one layup. Point's momentum proved to be too much as Mirial Cannon's mid-range game was put on display for the following score. Lanee Edwards continued to impress by making another three-pointer for Point and Shakira Wilson would score the final layup for the Skyhawks to win 65-44. 

In the Box 

Mataea Boyd, Ky'Leo Worriels, and Lanee Edwards each scored 12 points for the Skyhawks. Boyd added five rebounds and two steals. Worriels had a double-double as she added 13 rebounds with one blocked shot. Edwards added five rebounds and two made threes. Shanbriah Rule contributed 10 Points, four rebounds, and four assists.

The Skyhawks will return to the court against former Appalachian Athletic Conference foe, Montreat College on Saturday, October 28th at the West Point Park Gymnasium starting at 2:00 P.M.
