Women’s Basketball breezes past Union for a home AAC Victory

WEST POINT, Ga. (Jan. 21, 2023) - The Point University women's basketball team returned to action on Saturday at the West Point Gymnasium for an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup against Union College and won 82-28. 

In the first opening seconds of the game, Mataea Boyd got the Skyhawks on the scoreboard with two layups to jump ahead. Point's quick offensive game continued to flash as Mataea Boyd splashed her first three-pointer. The Bulldogs responded with a triple ball of their own to bring their deficit down to three. The Skyhawks retaliated with a layup as Mataea Boyd connected with Ky'Leo Worriels. Boyd continued to set the tone as she knocked down another three-pointer to push their lead to 14-8. Point's defensive intensity also matched their offensive firepower as the Skyhawks forced two more steals which caused Mataea Boyd and Mirial Cannon to score the layups off turnovers. As the quarter went on, Marta Gimenez helped Point push their lead to double digits with a three-pointer to end the first period. 

Destinee Ellison entered the fray by starting the second quarter with a smooth layup to the lane. The Bulldogs looked to respond with a layup, but the Skyhawks countered with another three-pointer. Destinee Ellison continued to fight through the lane for another solid take for the basket to push their lead to 28-12. With under three minutes, Jasmine Griggs slid past the defense to find Mataea Boyd for the quick layup to bring their lead to 20 points. Boyd would finish the first half with 18 points as the Skyhawks were ahead 38-19. 

Union started the third quarter with the first layup of the half as they hoped to make a comeback in the game. The Skyhawks did not take their foot off the gas as Mirial Cannon, and Ky'Leo Worriels dominated the paint. Jasmine Griggs pushed Point's lead further with the nothing-but-net three-pointer. Destinee Ellison entered the game and continued to contribute to the backcourt with another layup. Point's run did not stop there as Ellison and Mataea Boyd was responsible for the following three scores for the Skyhawks: two layups and a three-pointer. Point ended the quarter on a dominant run with hopes of continuing their effort on the court. 

Kyra Hart got the Skyhawks going in the fourth quarter with a three-pointer, followed by a layup from Mirial Cannon to bring their lead to 73-28. Hart added to her contributions with a smooth layup from the high post, similar to her layup from Milligan. Destinee Ellison continued to show flashes of her quickness as she breezed through the defense for the highlight reel take to the lane. Ky'Leo Worriels, Kyra Hart and Chinedu Nnadi scored the final points for the Skyhawks as they finished the game with an 83-28 score. 

In the box 

Mataea Boyd led the Skyhawks with 20 Points, three assists and four assists. Destinee Ellison added 15 Points, three rebounds and two steals off the bench. Marta Gimenez contributed nine points, four rebounds and five assists.
