Skyhawks’ blazing second half helps them cruise past the Bears

WEST POINT, Ga. (Jan. 17, 2023) - The Point University women's basketball team returned to action Tuesday night in an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup at home against Truett McConnell University and pulled through to win 48-29. 

The Bears jumped on the scoreboard first with a three-pointer followed by a layup to take a quick 5-0 lead. Ky'Leo Worriels helped put the Skyhawks on the scoreboard as she scored the next two layups for Point. Marta Gimenez followed with a steal on defense to finish with a fastbreak layup to put the Skyhawks ahead by one. Point scored their next two baskets in the paint as Jasmine Griggs and Ky'Leo Worriels were responsible for making the next two shots. The Skyhawks took their most significant lead of five as Marta Gimenez made the and-one layup, knocking down the free throw. The Bears charged their way back into the distance with two layups to bring their deficit to two. The Skyhawks scored the last bucket of the half as Sheyvonne Owens crashed the board for the putback layup to bring their lead to 15-11. 

The second quarter proved scrappy for both teams, with Truett McConnell jumping on the scoreboard first with two layups tying the game. Chinedu Nnadi entered the game and knocked down a three-pointer to put Point back in the lead, but the Bears responded with a three-point shot of their own to tie it back at 18. Both teams continued to bring the intensity on the floor until Jasmine Griggs broke the scoring drought with a solid take to the lane. Mataea Boyd made her opportunity from behind the arc count as she knocked down the triple ball. Truett McConnell scored their last bucket with a layup to trail 23-20 going into the half. 

Marta Gimenez got the Skyhawks started in the third quarter with a three-pointer which was the beginning of a hot streak for Point. Destinee Ellison showed her finesse to the lane with the smooth layup to push Point's lead to seven. The Skyhawks' lead seemingly increased with a deadeye three-pointer from Mirial Cannon, followed by two more three-point bombs with Chinedu Nnadi and Cannon making them count. Point's run continued with a layup from Ky'Leo Worriels and the Skyhawks would only allow two points in the third quarter to end with a 16-2 run. 

Point continued to push their way through the game as Ananda Hughley added a layup for the Skyhawks to bring their lead to 42-22. Tia Shelton for Truett McConnell halted the run from the Skyhawks by knocking down a three-pointer followed by a layup from Camilla Callihan. Mirial Cannon did not stop her three-point opportunities as she converted another three-point bomb for the Skyhawks. Point finished the game by adding three more free throws to win 48-27. 

In the box 

Marta Gimenez led the Skyhawks with 10 Points, six rebounds, seven assists and five steals. Mirial Cannon followed with nine points, five rebounds and two steals. Ky'Leo Worriels added eight points, seven rebounds and three blocks.
