Women’s Basketball falls to the Barons on the road

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. (Jan. 7, 2022) - The women's basketball team returned to action on Saturday afternoon in a nonconference road matchup against Brewton-Parker College and fell to the Barons with a final score of 77-59.

Brewton-Parker landed on the scoreboard first with a made jump shot. The Skyhawks returned the favor when Marta Gimenez connected with Ky'Leo Worriels for the layup. The Barons took the lead again with a triple but that lead would not last for long as Marta Gimenez and Mirial Cannon scored the next two baskets to put Point ahead by three. Both teams continued to trade leads back and forth until Marta Gimenez made the three-pointer to bring their lead to 13-9. Dominque Cooke entered the fray with a basket to extend the lead to six. Brewton-Parker retaliated with a three-pointer and a mid-range shot to trail by one. Point continued to hold their lead as Mirial Cannon made another jump shot, but the Barons hit the buzzer three-pointer to take the lead.

Brewton-Parker continued to stay hot from behind the arc as their next two baskets came three-pointers. Point looked to find answers on offense but the Barons continued to ride the hot hand with another three-pointer along with a layup to give them their most significant lead of 10. The Skyhawks' cold streak on offense continued as Brewton-Parker forced steals and added another triple to bring their lead 37-22. Point shook off the cold streak as Mataea Boyd made the jumper, but that would be the last basket made of the first half for the Skyhawks as they went into halftime trailing 42-24.

Jasmine Griggs put the Skyhawks on the board first in the third quarter with a three-pointer and followed that with a layup. Point continued to get their offense rolling as Mataea Boyd scored the next bucket to bring their deficit to 11. Brewton-Parker halted the 6-0 run as they scored another three-pointer, but Mataea Boyd responded with a triple of her own on the next trip. With the Skyhawks trailing by 12, the Barons continued to add pressure to the Skyhawks' late run as they continued their hot streak from the three-point line. Mirial Cannon added another jump shot for Point, followed by a made basket by Mataea Boyd. The Barons slowed down the Skyhawks' momentum with another triple, but the Skyhawks scored the following two buckets to trail by ten at the end of the third quarter.

Brewton-Parker started the final period with a three-pointer, but the Skyhawks came back on the other with a shot made from Mirial Cannon to bring the score to 61-51. Ky'Leo Worriels made the and-one layup to bring the game to single digits on the next trip but missed the go-ahead free throw. Brewton-Parker would draw many fouls and make their trips to the free-throw line count. The Barons pushed their lead 20 and would only allow two more points from the Skyhawks to get the win over Point.
