Women’s basketball falls to CIU on the road

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Jan. 18, 2022) — Sheyvonne Owens set a new school record for most rebounds in a single game, but the Point University women's basketball team was unable to defeat the Rams of Columbia International, as the Skyhawks fell 71-59 Tuesday evening on the road.

Owens recorded 22 rebounds, passing Chauntel Hood who set the record in 2012 with 21 boards. Owens recorded 11 rebounds on both offense and defense, adding five steals and nine points to her stat line. Iyanna McMillan recorded a team high of 17 points and Hannah Williams was the second Skyhawk in double figures with 13 points. Nicole Izuagie nearly recorded double figures with nine points.

A layup from Tasha Jackson earned Point a 10-5 lead with less than six minutes remaining in the opening quarter, but the Rams went on a 16-3 run to end the quarter and take a 21-13 lead. Point answered back with a 13-5 run to tie the score at 26 halfway through the second quarter. Four consecutive baskets from Izuagie, Owens, McMillan and Williams started Point's run and a triple from Izuagie followed by a layup from Williams would even the score. Both teams were back-and-forth for the remainder of the half with a layup from Williams tying the score at 34 with 38 seconds remaining, before the Rams connected for a layup to take a 36-34 lead at the break.

Out of the break, CIU's Madison Hatcher connected for a three-pointer to extend the Rams' lead out by five, and CIU held its lead for the remainder of the game, extending it out by double figures in the fourth quarter.

With the loss, the Skyhawks fell to 12-3 (8-3 AAC) and the Rams advanced to 7-9 (5-6 AAC).

Point will be back in action Thursday, as the Skyhawks host Reinhardt at 5:30 p.m.
