
Point University Softball Faces Setback at the Gulf Shores Invitational
GULF SHORES, Ala. (March 7th-8th, 2025) - The Point University Softball Team traveled to Gulf Shores, Ala. to compete in the Gulf Shores Invitational. To kick off the series, the Skyhawks played Central Methodist (MO) on Friday at 10:00 AM with a final score of 10-1. Shortly after, Lindsey Wilson took the win over Point with a score of 8-3. Continuing the series, on Saturday, the Skyhawks battled against Central Baptist (AR) but unfortunately were not able to overcome them resulting in a 4-1 loss. Lastly, the Skyhawks ended the Gulf Shores Invitational with a tough loss against Saint Xavier 18-3.
Game One vs. Central Methodist (MO) (10-1, Loss)
The Point University Skyhawks fell short against the Central Methodist Eagles with a final score of 10-1. Under sunny skies, the game started positively for the Skyhawks, with Isabella Owens scoring an early run. Despite an optimistic start, Central Methodist took control in crucial moments, particularly with significant innings in the 3rd and 4th that solidified their lead.
Point University's starting pitcher, Kendall Holbrook, faced tough competition from the Eagles' robust lineup. Although Skyhawks' MaKenzie Gilliland contributed with crucial RBIs, it wasn't enough to counter the Eagles' dominant performance throughout the game.
Game Two vs. Lindsey Wilson (8-3, Loss)
Point fell 8-3 to Lindsey Wilson's Blue Raiders in the second match of the Gulf Shores Invitational.
Despite the loss, individual performances from Point University players were notable. Isabella Owens had a strong showing, securing two hits with one turning into a double, and driving in two runs. Caylee Quarles also contributed significantly with two hits. Kendall Holbrook was among the trio who crossed the plate for the Skyhawks, showcasing the effort put in by the team. From the mound, Alyssa Burrows led the game as the starting pitcher, striving to contain the proficient Blue Raiders' lineup.
Although the Skyhawks could not secure the victory, the team demonstrated resilience and skill, indicated by personal achievements amidst a challenging game.
Game Three vs. Central Baptist (AR) (4-1, Loss)
On Saturday, the Skyhawks suffered a 4-1 defeat to the Central Baptist Mustangs. Despite a spirited effort, the Skyhawks struggled to capitalize on key opportunities, leading to a scoreline that did not reflect their competitive edge.
From the outset, the Skyhawks displayed resilience, with starter Alyssa Burrows pitching a strong game. The key moment for Point University came in the 5th inning when Avrianna Wapniewski crossed home plate due to a bases-loaded walk issued to Brooke Burkett, marking the team's only run of the contest. Although Burkett's RBI gave the Skyhawks a glimmer of hope, the Mustangs maintained control over the game's flow.
Offensive highlights for Point University included notable performances by Isabella Owens, who reached base twice, showcasing her tenacity with a hit-by-pitch and a single. Despite these efforts, the Skyhawks could not overcome the deficit established early in the game by Central Baptist.
Game Four vs. Saint Xavier (IL) (18-3, Loss)
In a challenging encounter, Point University faced a tough defeat against the Saint Xavier Cougars with a final score of 18-3. The game showcased the prowess of the Cougars who dominated the innings, accumulating 18 runs by the game's conclusion.
Starting pitcher for the Skyhawks, Claire Mitcham, faced a formidable Saint Xavier lineup that consistently pushed across runs throughout the event. For Point University, Isabella Owens, Natalie Lovelace, and Ansley Joiner contributed to the scoreboard, each adding a run to the Skyhawks' tally. Savanna Bryant managed to secure an RBI, but it wasn't enough to shift the momentum in favor of Point University.
