Point Softball Splits the Cola Classic Tournament

COLUMBIA, SC. (Feb. 7-8, 2025) - Point University Women's Softball competed in the Cola Classic in Columbia South Carolina this weekend. The Skyhawks faced a tough start falling 12-0 against Rio Grande. During the second game, Point came out on top against Columbia International with a score of 5-4. On Saturday, the Skyhawks continued the weekend series against Spartanburg Methodist sealing a win of 4-2 and the following game against Columbia College resulted in 3-1 favoring the Koalas. 
 

Game One (12-0, Loss) 

Despite the preparation and resilience shown by Point University, the outcome was overwhelmingly in favor of Rio Grande. The Skyhawks' starting pitcher, Kendall Holbrook, faced a relentless RedStorm offense that managed to secure an impressive lead early in the game, maintaining it throughout to clinch the victory. 
 

Game Two (5-4, Win) 

In a thrilling regular season encounter, the Point University Skyhawks secured a narrow victory against CIU Rams with a final score of 5-4 in Columbia, SC.  
 

The Skyhawks' roster showcased exceptional performances throughout the game. Kaila Phillips, Isabella Owens, Avrianna Wapniewski, and Ansley Joiner each crossed the plate, contributing significantly to the team's victory. Avrianna Wapniewski, along with Brooke Burkett, Kacy Partridge, and Kendall Holbrook, were pivotal with crucial RBI's. Alyssa Burrows held her ground as the starting pitcher, playing a key role in keeping the Rams' hitters at bay. 
 
A major turning point came in the top of the 3rd when Brooke Burkett singled and later scored, injecting momentum into the Skyhawks' gameplay. Additionally, Kacy Partridge's walk and Ansley Joiner's strategic pinch run scored on a stolen base and an error in the dramatic top of the 7th inning, ultimately proving to be decisive. 
 

Game Three (4-2, Win) 

The Skyhawks sealed a solid 4-2 victory against the Spartanburg Methodist Pioneers. The triumph was highlighted by standout performances and a strong team effort. 

The game saw the Skyhawks lead by the powerful pitching of Chloe Mitcham, who delivered an impressive performance from the mound. Offensively, Point University's lineup sparkled, with Taylor Gajdik, Sarah Hinely, Kaila Phillips, and Isabella Owens all crossing the plate, contributing crucial runs to the team's success. 
 
Isabella Owens, Savanna Bryant, and Avrianna Wapniewski were instrumental in driving the runs needed to clinch the win. Owens and Bryant each secured an RBI through sacrifice flies, demonstrating a tactical prowess that proved decisive. Avrianna Wapniewski added to the RBI tally, helping to secure the Skyhawks' win. Notably, Kaila Phillips performed robustly, managing one hit, getting on base with a walk, and being hit by a pitch, further demonstrating her resilience and tenacity. 

 

Game Four (3-1, Loss) 

Point was narrowly defeated by the Columbia College Koalas with a final score of 3-1. The game showcased both teams' resolute defenses and standout performances, albeit with the Koalas taking the upper hand. 
 
During the game, the Skyhawks saw a particularly memorable performance from Ansley Joiner who scored the team's only run in the 4th inning, and Brooke Burkett, who contributed with an RBI. The critical moment came when Ansley Joiner capitalized on an error by the opponent's shortstop, marking the lone scoring play for the Skyhawks amidst a challenging contest. 
 
Alyssa Burrows took the mound as the starting pitcher for Point University, putting up a valiant effort against a formidable Columbia lineup. Despite the defeat, the Skyhawks displayed great teamwork and resilience under pressure.

Looking forward, Point University's next challenge is scheduled for February 12th as they gear up to face Tuskegee in West Point, Georgia at 3:00 and 5:00 P.M.
