Point Softball clipped at home by #19 William Carey

WEST POINT, Ga. (Mar. 28, 2024) - The Point University Softball returned to action for an afternoon Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader against #19 William Carey University where the Skyhawks fell to the Crusaders in a sweep. 

Game One (9-0, Loss) 

The Crusaders opened the top of the first inning with one run as William Carey added a triple to right field to bring the score to 1-0. Point looked to return the favor by adding hits in the bottom of the inning, but the first three batters were retired to end the first inning. With two runners on, the Crusaders hit a double to center field in the top of the second to add two runs to their lead. William Carey continued to build on their lead as the Crusaders added four runs in the top of the third inning to lead 7-0. Wellsley Henderson opened the bottom of the inning with a walk to first followed by Caylee Quarles getting on base. The Skyhawks looked to add some steam but William Carey escaped the inning with a strikeout and a putout from shortstop to first base. The Crusaders added two more runs and won in five innings with a final score of 9-0. 

Game Two (13-3, Loss) 

Point opened the bottom of the first inning with Hannah Phillips adding a single past the shortstop. Ramsey Clark followed with a sacrifice bunt to help advance Phillips to second and keep the early momentum going. An error from the Crusaders, helped Hannah Phillips take her opportunity to advance home to give Point a 1-0 lead. William Carey responded in the top of the second inning by loading the bases and adding their first run with a batter being walked. The game remained tied through two innings until the Crusaders took the lead with a double scoring two runners home to lead 3-1. The Skyhawks did not go away as Mary Durham added an infield single past the shortstop advancing Brooke Burkett home for their second run to trail by one. Point continued their high energy on the defensive side as a runner was caught stealing on second and tagged out by Hannah Phillips for the first out. The Skyhawks ended the inning with a big play as Brooke Burkett connected with Savanna Bryant for a force out at home plate to avoid giving up a run from William Carey. The game was tied at three as Wellsley Henderson advanced home from third base with the defense focusing on a force out at second. As both teams went into the seventh inning tied at three, the Crusaders fired away with a double to left field, a triple to center field, and an RBI single scoring a total of six runs. The Crusaders finished with a grand slam to center to end the inning with 10 runs. The Skyhawks could not respond to the runs as William Carey finished the doubleheader in a sweep.
