Point Softball outdueled at home by the Nighthawks

WEST POINT, Ga. (Mar. 16, 2024) - The Point University Softball team returned to the field for a sunny, Saturday afternoon Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader against Thomas University where the Skyhawks fell to the Nighthawks in a sweep. Thomas took Game One in a tight duel with a final score of 1-0 and followed with a Game Two win with a final score of 6-0.

Game One (1-0, Loss)

The first inning opened with the Skyhawks adding the first hit of the game as Ramsey Clark connected on a bunt and used her speed to get on base. The Nighthawks were able to remain solid and get out of the inning to keep the game scoreless. Thomas looked to fire away in the second inning but two putouts and a perfectly placed strikeout from Katelyn Jiles left the Nighthawks with no runs or hits. Point opened the bottom of the second inning with a single past the pitcher from Savanna Bryant and a sacrifice bunt from Skye Loftin to move two runners in scoring position. With one out, the Nighthawks capitalized with a putout at first base and at home to keep the Skyhawks scoreless. Thomas built momentum on their side by opening the fifth inning with a single past the shortstop and a sacrifice bunt to put two runners on base. Averie Sheppard from Thomas University followed with a triple to score a runner home for the game's first run to lead 1-0. Point opened the bottom of the inning with a single to center field from Ansley Joiner and a single past third base from Wellsley Henderson. As the Skyhawks looked to add multiple runs to take the lead, the Nighthawks stood their ground to end the inning with runners left on base. Thomas finished the game only allowing one more hit from Point to hold on for the 1-0 win in Game One.

Game Two (6-0, Loss)

The Nighthawks opened the top of the first inning with an RBI single for the first run to lead 1-0. As Ramsey Clark followed with a hit past the shortstop, the Nighthawks did not let the bottom of the inning go any longer as a double play ended the momentum shift. Thomas continued to build their lead as the Nighthawks added a single to left field to score a runner home for their second run of the game. Wellsley Henderson followed with a double to left field to give the Skyhawks some hope at bat but a fly out to center field on the next play ended the inning. The Nighthawks added three runs in the top of the fifth inning with a double to left field, scoring on a throwing error, and a sacrifice fly. Thomas scored the final run of the game as the Nighthawks added a double to left field to hold the Skyhawks scoreless and win 6-0.
