Skyhawks get fourth sweep in row, takes doubleheader over Buffs

WEST POINT, Ga. (March 25, 2023) – The Point University softball team played a home AAC doubleheader on Saturday against Milligan University and would sweep. The Skyhawks would win game one, 2-1 and win game two, 10-0 (mercy rule in 5 innings) to take the sweep. Today's sweep is the softball teams fourth sweep in a row.

 

Game 1 – 2-1 WIN

The pitcher's duel in Game 1, would see the Skyhawks use three pitchers on their way to a 2-1 victory. The starter Mary Michael Burnham would go 2.1 innings, but after she allowed an earned run in the top of the third, she was relieved for Chloe Mitcham. Mitcham would go 3.2 innings, getting the win, while allowing no runs on two hits, walking one and striking out one. The Skyhawks would tie the game at 1-1 when Taylor Knight would hit an RBI double to left field to score Devon Foster. The Skyhawks would take the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Devon Foster would single to center field, scoring Brianna Plocharczyk to make it 2-1. Ashlynn Hamm would come in for Mitcham in the top of the seventh after the Buffs would get two runners on and the batter had a 2-0 count. Hamm would induce three flyouts to center fielder, Haley Lyner to win Game 1, 2-1 and record a save.

Game 2 – 10-0 WIN (5 innings)

The Skyhawks bats would heat up in Game 2, as they would score 10 runs on 12 hits to get a 10-0 mercy rule and the sweep. Haley Lyner would get the scoring started in the bottom of the first with a single to score Devon Foster to make 1-0. Later in the inning, Gabrielle Riley would single to the left side for two RBIs to score Lyner and Alexus Griffin to make it 3-0. During the bottom of the second, Taylor Knight would single to score both Griffin and Devon Foster to make it a 5-0 softball. Allie Davis would keep the offense going with her single to make it 6-0 after Lyner would score. Gabrielle Riley would add another hit to the Skyhawks in the second when she would single to score Allie Davis to make it 7-0. The Skyhawks would add their eighth run when Lyner would single to score Foster to make it 8-0 after the third. The bottom of the fourth would see the Skyhawks add two more insurance runs to make it 10-0. Wesllsley Henderson would hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Riley and make it 9-0. McKensie Barnes would single up the middle to score Brianna Plocharczyk to make it 10-0. The Skyhawks would hold on to take the 10-0 Game 2 victory and get a sweep of Milligan this afternoon. Ashlynn Hamm would get the win going 4 innings in relief after she came in for starter Katelyn Jiles to add to her save of Game 1.

Next Game

The softball team would be back in action on Wednesday, March 29 on the road when they take on AAC for, Truett-McConnell with the first pitch scheduled for 3:00 P.M.
