Skyhawks get sweep at Montreat

BLACK MOUNTAIN, Nc. (March 18, 2023) – The Point University softball team played an away AAC conference doubleheader against Montreat College and got the sweep. The Skyhawks would win game one, 14-6 and game two, 8-5.

GAME 1 – 14-6 WIN

The doubleheader would be moved down the road from Montreat College to Big League Camp in Black Mountain, NC, which is an all-artificial turf complex due to wet playing conditions. The Skyhawks offense came alive in Game 1 of the double header, scoring 14 runs on 20 hits. Haley Lyner would get the offense started in the top of the first with a lead-off home run to left field to make it 1-0. The Cavaliers would score four runs in the bottom of the first to make it 4-1. The top of the second, Devon Foster would single up the middle to score both Brianna Plocharczyk and Gabrielle Riley to cut the lead to 4-3. The Cavaliers would add another run in the bottom of the second to make it a 5-3 lead. The Skyhawks would take the lead in the third from two home runs to make it a 6-5 Skyhawks lead. Allie Davis would hit a 2-run homer and later in the inning, Skye Loftin would add a solo shot. In the top of the fourth, Gabrielle Riley would hit a 3-run homer to make it 9-5. The Cavaliers would get one run back in the fourth to make it 9-6, which would be their last run scored of the game. The Skyhawks would get a double down the left field line by Gabrielle Riley to score Allie Davis to make it a 10-6 game. Sabrina Russell would single down the left field line to score Gabrielle Riley to make it 11-6. Alexus Griffin would single to center to score Kayla Wyatt to make it a 12-6 score. In the seventh, Allie Davis would hit a solo shot to left field to make it 13-6. Later in the inning, Skye Loftin would hit a solo home run to left center to make it a 14-6 game. The Skyhawks huge offensive production would lead to the Game 1 victory, 14-6. Chloe Mitcham was huge coming out of the bullpen for five innings, allowing one earned run, scattering five hits, walking one and striking three. Mitcham would notch the win in her five innings of relief work in Game 1.

GAME 2 – 8-5 WIN (8 innings)

This game would start off with Taylor Knight singling to left center to score Devon Foster to make it a 1-0 Skyhawk lead. Skye Loftin would single to left field to score Allie Davis to make it 2-0 in the top of the third. The Cavaliers would tie the game up at 2-2 on a 2-run homer. The Skyhawks would get a three-run home run from Gabrielle Riley to retake the lead at 5-2. The bottom of the fifth, the Cavaliers would score a run to make it 5-3. In the bottom of the seventh, the Cavaliers would help send the game into extra innings when they would hit a two-run homer to tie the game up at 5-5.  The Skyhawks would make sure the eighth inning would be the last of the game when they would score 3 runs to retake the lead at 8-5. The inning would see McKensie Barnes score on a wild pitch, Taylor Knight hit an RBI single and Allie Davis hit an RBI double. The Skyhawks would have Katelyn Jiles come out for the eighth inning and she would finish her complete game. Jiles would allow five earned runs on nine hits, walking two and striking out six batters to help lead the Skyhawks to the Game 2 victory, 8-5 and a sweep of Montreat College.

Next Game:

The softball team will travel to Decatur, Ga. on Tuesday, March 21 to play a doubleheader against Agnes Scott College with the first pitch scheduled for 3:00 P.M.
