Softball sweeps in the Bluegrass State

GRAYSON, Ky. (March 8, 2023) – The Point University softball team played an away AAC doubleheader on Wednesday against Kentucky Christian University and would sweep. The Skyhawks would win game one, 6-5 and win game two, 13-4 (five innings mercy rule) to take the sweep.

 

Game 1 – 6-5 WIN

KCU scored two runs off two hits and three walks in the bottom of the first. Then they would score again two runs in the second inning. The Skyhawks would respond in the top of the fourth with four runs after Haley Lyner would lead off with double. Taylor Knight reached on error by the shortstop. Wellsley Henderson walked, then Allie Davis hit a single to score Lyner and Knight. Kayla Wyatt would hit a base clearing double to pick up the other two runs on inning. KCU would add one more run in the fifth with a solo home run. The Skyhawks would battle back in the seventh to score two runs started by Devon Foster's single, followed by Alexus Griffin single. Lyner would pick up an RBI with a double and then Henderson would hit a sac fly to right field to score Griffin from third base for the go ahead run. Jiles would come in to relieve Chloe Mitcham and record the last three outs to give the Skyhawks a 6-5 win on the road in Game 1.

 

In the Circle

Ashlynn Hamm would get the start and throw 1.1 innings before being relieved by Chloe Mitcham in the second inning. Mitcham would get the win going 4.2 innings allowing one run on two hits, walking one and striking out three batters. Katelyn Jiles would come in the seventh and get the save allowing no runs and striking one batter.

 

Game 2 – 13-4 WIN (5 innings)

The Skyhawks would use a huge offensive breakthrough to eventually win in a run rule. They would total 13 hits and score 13 runs to eventually run rule the Knights in five complete innings of work. Katelyn Jiles would throw the complete game in the circle.

1st inning: Point would tally five runs off five hits, but in the bottom of inning give up four runs. Those would be the only runs scored by KCU in rest of the game.

3rd inning: Point adds four runs off three hits and one walk, including a three-run home run by Gabrielle Riley.

5th inning: Point adds four more runs to the board after Riley led off with double and Brianna Plocharczyk followed with triple to right field corner.

 

In the Circle

Katelyn Jiles would come out to start game two and would throw a complete five innings in the mercy rule to get the win in the circle. Jiles would allow three earned runs on eight hits, walking three and striking out four batters.

Next softball game:

The softball team will be back in action Tuesday, March 14 when they head on the road to take on Brenau (GA) in an AAC conference doubleheader. First pitch scheduled for 3:00 P.M.
