Battle of the "hawks", ends in a split

WEST POINT, Ga. (February 17, 2023) – The Point University softball team played a home doubleheader on Friday against Thomas University. The Skyhawks would split the doubleheader with a 17-5 loss in game one and 8-3 win in game two.

Game 1 – 17-5 LOSS

The Nighthawks put up a six spot in the top of the first inning to lead 6-0. Two more runs would be added by the Nighthawks in the top of the third to make it 8-0. The top of the fourth would see two more runs cross the plate to give them a commanding 10-0. The Skyhawks would rally to get two runs in the bottom of the  fourth to make it 10-2 off of an RBI double from Gabrielle Riley and an RBI sac fly from Alexus Griffin. In the bottom of the fifth, the Skyhawks would score two more runs to fight off the mercy rule by making it 10-4. After a Nighthawks solo homer in the sixth to make it 11-4, the Skyhawks would add a run in the bottom half of the sixth to make it 11-5. The Nighthawks would add six runs in the top of the seventh to help secure the victory with the 17-5 win for the away team in game one.

Inside the Circle

Mary Michael Burnham would get the loss tonight going 0.2 innings, allowing six earned runs on four hits, while allowing one walk and striking out one. The Skyhawks would send four more pitchers to the circle with Ashlynn Hamm (2.1 IP), Zada Smith (0.2 IP), Raley Thorn (3.0 IP), and Emma Kilgo (0.1 IP)

Game 2 – 8-3

The Skyhawks would get the scoring started in the bottom of the first with a solo homer by Haley Lyner to give the Skyhawks the early 1-0 lead. Taylor Knight would single in the bottom of the third to score both Kayla Wyatt and Brianna Plocharczyk to make it 3-0 for the Skyhawks. The Nighthawks would score three runs with a run coming in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. The Skyhawks would score one run in the bottom of the fifth on a Gabrielle Riley RBI single to make it 4-1. The Skyhawks would score three runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-2. The final score would be 8-3, with your Skyhawks taking the win and getting a split on the day against Thomas University.

Inside the Circle

Katelyn Jiles would throw a complete game this evening. Jiles would go seven innings, giving up 3 earned runs on three hits, while allowing one walk and striking out two.
