Softball Sweeps Tuskegee in Regular Season Finale

WEST POINT, Ga. (April 20, 2022) – The Point University softball team hosted Tuskegee University in a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon that concluded the 2022 regular season for the Skyhawks. The Skyhawks won the first game 6-3, and the second game 10-1 in six innings.

Game 1: Point: 6, Tuskegee: 3

The Skyhawks jumped on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning when Haley Lyner doubled to center field, scoring Brianna Plocharczyk, making the score 1-0. The bats stayed alive for the Skyhawks in the second inning as Alexus Griffin scored Taylor Knight on an RBI-single, and a sacrifice fly from Devin Foster scored Chelsea Parker to help the Skyhawks take the lead 3-0.  

After a few scoreless innings, Point tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, starting with an error that allowed Foster to score. Taylor Knight then singled down the left field line and scored two runs to allow the Skyhawks to take the lead 6-0. The Golden Tigers scored three runs to cut the Skyhawk lead in half, but that was all the damage Tuskegee would do and the Skyhawks went on the win the game 6-3.

Point was led offensively by Taylor Knight who went 2-for-3 from the plate with two RBI's. Plocharczyk, Lyner, Griffin, and Asia Jones each went 1-for-3. The Skyhawks finished with six runs on seven hits. Mary Burnham took the circle for the Skyhawks and pitched seven innings, giving up three runs (two earned), five hits and struck out one.

Game 2: Point: 10, Tuskegee: 1

After a quiet first inning, the Skyhawk's bats came alive in the second inning and scored six runs. The Skyhawk's scoring started with an RBI-single from Parker that scored Knight. Later in the inning, Devin Foster scored Meagan Pildner on a hit up the middle and Brianna Plocharczyk followed with a double to left center field, scoring Chelsea Parker. Foster then scored following an RBI-single from Lyner and Point's rally continued after that with an error that allowed Plocharczyk to score. In her second plate appearance of the inning, Knight singled up and middle and scored Lyner, making the score 6-0.

The Golden Tigers scored one run in the top of the fourth inning to cut Point's lead to 6-1, but  Parker responded in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run home run to extend Point's lead to 8-1. In the following inning, Jones scored the game winning runs following a double to right center field, putting the run-rule into effect.

The Skyhawks were led offensively by Parker, who went 3-for-3 from the plate with a home run and three-RBIs. Plocharczyk went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Lyner and Meagan Pildner each went 2-for-3 from the plate. The Skyhawks connected for 10 runs off 13 hits. Katelyn Jiles started in the circle for the Skyhawks and pitched three innings, gave up no hits and struck out one. Ashlynn Hamm came in for relief, pitching three innings, giving up three hits, and one run (unearned).

The Skyhawks finished the regular season 30-18. Point will be back in action April 25th at the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament in Kingsport, Tenn.
