Skyhawks, Tigers split doubleheader

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (Feb. 18, 2022) – After winning game one in commanding fashion, the Point University softball team fell in extra innings in game two to split Friday afternoon's doubleheader at Stillman College. Point run-ruled Stillman 11-0 in game one and lost 8-7 in eight innings in game two.

Through 10 games this season, the Skyhawks are now 7-3.

Mary Burnham threw her second shutout of the season, and Haley Lyner went 4-for-4 with three RBI's to lead the Skyhawks to victory in game one. Devin Foster, Brianna Plocharczyk and Asia Jones all recorded two hits apiece, with Plocharczyk recording two RBI's and Jones scoring three.

Point scored in every inning, starting the day off with two runs in the first. A single to left field from Jones scored Polcharczyk and a fielder's choice allowed Lyner to score later in the inning. In the second, Lyner singled to right field to score Alexus Griffin and Foster and Jones singled to right field and an error on the right fielder allowed Lyner to score. The Skyhawks entered the third inning leading 5-0 and added four runs in with an RBI single from Plocharczyk, scoring Meagan Pildner and Chelsea Parker to start Point's rally, followed by an RBI single from Lyner to score Foster and an infield ground out allowed Plocharczyk to score.

The Skyhawks scored a run in the fourth and the fifth inning, with Pildner connecting for a solo home run in the fourth and an infield ground out in the fifth allowed Lyner to reach home. Burnham was able to get the Tigers out in order in the bottom of the fifth to help the Skyhawks earn the run-rule victory.

Tigers earn walk-off victory

In the second game, the Tigers' offense came alive as Stillman took an early 5-1 lead after two innings. Point tied things up in the top of the third, posting four runs and added another run in the fifth to take a 6-5 lead, but Stillman answered in the bottom of the inning to tie the score at six. Neither team was able to find a way to score over the next three innings, sending the game into extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, Gabrielle Riley connected for an RBI single to score McKensie Barnes on second to give Point the lead 7-6. In the bottom of the inning, the Tigers rallied back, scoring two runs to earn the walk-off victory.

Foster led Point's offense, going 3-for-5. Jones went 2-for-5 with two RBI's and Pildner went 2-for-3.

The Skyhawks will remain on the road for their next three doubleheaders. Point will travel to Middle Georgia State on Tuesday, Feb. 22, for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
