Big scoring innings help Skyhawks sweep Brewton-Parker

WEST POINT, Ga. (Feb. 12, 2022) – Five runs in the bottom of the second in game one and four runs in the bottom of the sixth in game two proved to be the momentum the Point University softball team needed as they went on to defeat Brewton-Park College 5-1 in game one and 7-4 in game two Saturday afternoon in West Point.

With Saturday's sweep, the Skyhawks are now 4-2.

Game one- Point: 5 BPC: 1

Point's offense quickly came alive in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, as a single by Chelsea Parker would make the bases loaded with one out, and Ariyon Hightower would follow, reaching base on a walk to bring home Taylor Knight. With bases still loaded, an error by the Barons' outfielder would bring Kayla Wyatt home. A fielder's choice would allow Parker to score to make the score 3-0, and back-to-back hits up the middle by Meagan Pildner and Haley Lyner would bring home Hightower and Devin Foster.

Neither team would score for the next four innings until a solo home run from Brewton-Parker's Abbey Flowers would get the Barons on the board in the top of the seventh. With runners on second and third, Ashlynn Hamm would come in for relief and get the final out of the game to help secure the victory for the Skyhawks.

Point finished game one with eight hits. Wyatt led the offense, going 3-for-3. Foster, Pildner and Lyner all accounted for an RBI. Mary Burnham earned the victory in game one, going 6.2 innings, giving up four hits, one run (earned), and striking out three.

Game two- Point: 7 BPC: 4

The Skyhawks would again take an early lead in game two, with a single from Parker in the second scoring Gabrielle Riley. A home run from BPC in the top of the third would give the Barons a 2-1 lead, but a single but the middle from Asia Jones would score Brianna Plocharczyk, and Lyner would advance home on the throw to give the Skyhawks the lead 3-2.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Skyhawks would rally to score four runs to take a 7-2 lead. Allie Davis would start Point's rally with an RBI single, scoring Jones. Alexus Griffin would single to left field, driving in Wyatt and Foster would follow with a 2-RBI single, scoring Griffin and Parker.

Point's sixth-inning rally proved to be essential, as the Barons attempted a late-game comeback, scoring two runs in the top of the seventh, but Hamm would once again prevent the Barons from taking the lead, as she secured the final out of the game off a fly-out to right field.

Nine Skyhawks accounted for 10 hits, with Jones leading the way, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Foster accounted for two runs, going 1-for-4, Allie Davis accounted for an RBI in her only appearance at the plate, and Griffin went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Katelyn Jiles got the start, going 3.0 innings, giving up two hits, two runs (both earned), walking two and striking out four. Hamm got the win, going 4.0 innings, giving up three hits, two runs (both earned), walking one and striking out one.
