
Point Men’s Soccer sparks River Bowl Stadium with a Season Opening win
WEST POINT, Ga. (Aug. 22, 2024) - The Point Men's Soccer opened their 2024 Campaign by taking the pitch against Talladega College where the Skyhawks rallied past the Tornadoes with a final score of 2-1.
Talladega opened the First Half with an early goal to take the 1-0 lead over the Skyhawks. As the half continued, Point looked to adjust to the fast start by the Tornadoes with multiple shots on frame but would be unable to add a first-half score. As both opponents entered the second half, the Skyhawks put their halftime adjustments on display as Diogo Palhoto connected with Gihong Kang to tie the game at one apiece. The new energy at the River Bowl Stadium carried through the half with the Skyhawks making life hard on the Tornadoes with Simon Niksh tallying multiple saves. A switch in goal was enough to continue to add pressure to Talladega with Point continuing to take their shots when needed and take advantage of each foul committed by the Tornadoes. In the final three minutes, the momentum shifted with Diogo Palhoto taking his opportunity with a corner shot to push the Skyhawks ahead 2-1. Point's defense did enough to hold on and earn the win in front of their fans for the season opener with a hard-fought win to start the season with a victory.
In the Box
Point took 13 shots with seven on goal compared to the Tornadoes' 11 shots and five on goal. Gihong Kang and Diogo Palhoto each scored a goal for the Skyhawks in the contest. In goal, Simon Niksch added four saves with his first win of the season.
