Men’s Soccer drop SSAC Opener to #9 Mobile

WEST POINT, Ga. (Sept. 14, 2023) - The Point University Men's Soccer team took the field at the Riverl Bowl Stadium for the home Southern States Athletic Conference opener against the #9 Ranked University of Mobile where the Skyhawks fell 4-0. 

The matchup between both teams started with Jacob Illmer looking to pick up where he left off by attacking the Rams on the defensive end but would be unable to convert past the Rams. The Skyhawks continued their fast-paced offensive attack to add more pressure to Mobile but could not take the momentum. Mobile would be the first team to hit the scoreboard as the Rams scored the first goal as the first period ended. 

Diogo Palhoto started the second half by taking the first shot on goal, but the Rams continued to stay solid in goal. Mobile's offense elevated as the Rams found their rhythm on the offensive end to score their second goal. The Skyhawks continued to find a way to get past the Rams to take another shot past the goalie, but Mobile's defense continued to rally. On offense for Mobile, their momentum grew as the Rams continued to connect to extend their lead to 3-0. As the half started to wind down, Mobile scored their final goal of the game to defeat the Skyhawks 4-0. 

In the box 

Point took six shots with four on goal compared to the Rams' 17 shots with 12 on goal. Jacob Illmer, David Cho, Brandon Cervantes, and Diogo Palhoto each had a shot on goal. Simon Niksch made the start at goalkeeper and came away with three saves. Due to an injury from Niksch, Callum Thompson came in to finish the game, where he finished with five saves.

Point will return to the River Bowl stadium for a home SSAC matchup against William Carey University on Saturday, September 16th, starting at 7:30 P.M.
