Historic Day by Fabian Saborio soars Skyhawks over KCU

WEST POINT, Ga. (Oct. 22, 2022) - The Point University men's soccer team took the field Saturday evening for an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup against Kentucky Christian University. The Skyhawks soared behind an in game goal record broken by Fabian Saborio with six goals and a 9-0 win on senior night.

The Skyhawks started their scoring off in the 19 minute, with a goal by Fabian Saborio with an assist by Brandon Cervantes. Diego Espino would follow up with a goal of his own for the Skyhawks in the 26 minute. The onslaught continued with a goal by David Cho, assist by Zane Whitehead in the 33 minute. The Skyhawks scored again four minutes later with a goal by Fabian Saborio, assist by Brandon Cervantes to make it 4-0 Point. A hat trick by Fabian Saborio with his third goal of the contest in the 40 minute to move the score to 5-0. Point would take that commanding 5-0 lead and all of the momentum going into the locker room at halftime.

The second half started with the fourth goal of the game by Fabian Saborio, assist by Pablo Gamboa in the 49 minute of the contest to make it 6-0. The Knights paced the Skyhawks up and down the field until the fifth goal of the evening for Fabian Saborio, assist by Alejandro Schmidt in the 78 minute to make it 7-0. The fifth goal this evening, doubles his career total in goals in the matchup. One minute later, Diego Matarrita added to the scoring party with a goal of his own, assist by Alejandro Schmidt to make the score 8-0. Double hat trick by Fabian Saborio, assist by Diego Matarrita in the 89 minute made it 9-0 for the final.

Fabian Saborio led all Skyhawks with six goals on the evening. Diego Espino, David Cho, and Diego Matarrita each scored a goal in the contest. Zane Whitehead, Alejandro Schmidt and Brandon Cervantes had assists. Jaime Ramirez, Brandon Cervantes, Tommy Eskew, Max Paul Busnel, Diogo Palhoto and Luca Ganio-Mego all had shots on goal recorded. The Knights had Ethan Combs and Douglas Porter both recording a shot on goal in the matchup.

Niels Van Gool tallied two saves for the Skyhawks on only two shots on goal attempted by the Knights.

Remembering Our Seniors

#2 Diego Espino- Diego is a defender from Panama City. He has been a Skyhawk for 4 years and is majoring in Business Management and Marketing. Diego's plan after graduating is to try to make it pro somewhere and create my own company related to sports. His favorite memory as a Skyhawk is the ring season in 2021, which was their championship year. From Diego: I would like to thank God for giving me the opportunity to make this a reality and all the people who has been a part of this journey. I would also like to thank my family, coaches, and teammates.

#3 Winfred Dixson- Winfred is a forward and midfielder from Barnesville, Georgia. He has been a Skyhawk for five years and is majoring in Business Marketing. Dixon's plan after graduating is to pursue content marketing or brand management in fashion and sportswear. Winfred's favorite memory as a Skyhawk is his first team debut at Pensacola Christian during his sophomore year. From Winfred: I would like to thank God, my teammates, coaches, family, and Andrew Welch.

#12 Fabian Saborio- Fabi is a striker from San Jose, Costa Rica. He has been a Skyhawk since 2018 and is a dual major with business administration and psychology as two. Fabi's plans after graduating are to go to Canada where he can be close to his family and start working. His favorite memory as a Skyhawk was his first ever season where his team won 15 games in a row, going as a number one seed in the season tournament. From Fabi: I would like to thank God, for giving me everything that I have today. Also to my parents, who have helped me every step of the way and supporting me to follow my dream of playing soccer in college. Finally, to my brother and sister, which have supported me every day and every game.

#17 Cameron Ruffin- Cameron is a center back from Atlanta, Georgia and is being accompanied by his mom Shelly, his dad Kirk, and his teammate Gihong. Cameron has been a Skyhawk for 5 years and is majoring in accounting. His plans after graduating is getting his CPA or going into real estate. His favorite memory as a Skyhawk was meeting his current housemates, which he met during his freshman year. From Cameron: I would like to thank Coach Mark and my parents for allowing me to play.

#19 Joshua Rash- Joshua is a center back and right-back from Pooler, Georgia. He has been a Skyhawk for 3 years and is majoring in Exercise Science. Joshua's plan after graduating is to pursue a Physical Therapy degree. His favorite memory as a Skyhawk is the home game during the conference tournament. Rash has said he would like to thank his parents for always being there for him.

#22 Jaime Ramirez- Jaime is a midfielder from Mount Zion, Georgia. He has been a Skyhawk for 5 years and is majoring in Business Management. Jaime's plan after graduating is to own a couple of businesses. His favorite memory as a Skyhawk is getting to meet and play with such amazing people. From Jamie: I would like to thank Coach Mark for the beautiful opportunity.
