Men’s Basketball drops season finale in a tight matchup against Thomas

WEST POINT, Ga. (Feb. 24, 2024) - The Point University Men's Basketball team returned to the court for their season finale against Thomas University in a Southern States Athletic Conference matchup where the Skyhawks fell 73-71. 

The first half opened with Joshua Scott putting the Skyhawks in the scoring first as he finished with a layup. Thomas followed with a 6-2 run but Point would not be too far behind as the Justice Hayes converted on a three-pointer and tip-in to cut the Nighthawks' lead to 13-9. A corner three from Kenton Steele kept the game within four points and Steele followed with the next possession by scoring in the paint. As the Skyhawks cut the game within two points, Thomas added two consecutive three-pointers to push their lead back to nine. The half ended with the Nighthawks leading 35-25. 

Robert Kendrick opened the second half with a layup to bring the Nighthawks' lead to single digits. Thomas extended their lead back to double digits with coined opportunities from the charity stripe and two three-pointers. Thomas pushed their lead to 57-41 as the momentum continued to stay within the Nighthawks. As the game entered under six minutes, Robert Kendrick converted on a three-pointer to cut the Thomas lead to 60-52. The run continued as Kenton Steele added two free throws and Kendrick converted on a layup. The game was brought to one point as Robert Kendrick followed with a three-pointer to trail 61-60. Both opponents continued to trade baskets as Theron Montgomery's free throw and a jumper from Mike Evans kept the game within two points at 1:36. The Nighthawks followed with a layup in the paint to bring their lead to 69-65. Point stayed calm within the moment as two fouls from the Nighthawks kept the Skyhawks within striking distance while trailing 70-69. As Thomas added two free throws to lead by three, Mike Evans brought the gym with a big shot as he brought the Nighthawks' lead to 72-71. Off the inbound, Point committed the foul to send Thomas to the charity stripe where the Nighthawks went one-for-two to bring the score to 73-71. With one last possession for Point, Mike Evans took the final shot from three but would be unable to convert which brought the game to a close with Thomas winning 73-71.

Robert Kendrick led with 19 Points and eight rebounds. Kenton Steele followed with 15 Points and rebounds. Mike Evans contributed with 11 Points, four rebounds, and three assists.

The Skyhawks have ended their 2023-24 season and will focus on preparing for the 2024-25 season with their second year in the SSAC.
