Men's basketball escapes St. Andrew's in OT

LAURINBURG, Nc. (February 9, 2023) – The Point University men's basketball team went on the road for AAC conference matchup against St. Andrew's and came out with the overtime victory by a score of 82-77.

The Skyhawks would get the scoring started when Jake Smith would make a layup for the points of the game. Javier Turner would get an old fashion three-pointer to give the Skyhawks an early 5-2 lead. RJ Selman would connect on a three-pointer off a pass by Jake Smith to make it 10-5. The Knights would go on a 9-0 run and take a 14-10 lead. A 5-0 run by the Knights would give them a six-point lead at 19-13. The Knights would push their lead to ten points by 26-16. Jake Smith would add to a 6-0 run for the Skyhawks that would cut the Knights lead to 26-22. Coming out of a full timeout at the six minute mark, Jake Smith would connect on a jump shot to make it 33-28 in favor of the Knights. The Knights would go on a 10-0 run to make it 43-28 with 1:29 remaining in the first half. The Skyhawks would trail the Knights heading to the locker room for halftime with a score of 43-31.

After a missed Knights shot to start the second half, Jake Smith would get a defensive rebound and pass it up court to Javier Turner. The Knights would foul Turner and he would head to the line where he would connect on both of his free throws to make it a 43-33 game. Point would call a full timeout after Benjamin Ross would make a layup to make it 49-58 at the 8:57 mark. RJ Selman's three-pointer would bring the Skyhawks back within one point at 59-58 after a Knights turnover. A three-pointer and two made free throws from the Knights would see St. Andrew's take a full timeout with the lead at 64-59 with 3:36 to play in the second half. A big-time dunk from Theron Montgomery, assist by Sam Rees would cut the lead to 64-61 and Point would take a 30 second timeout. The Knights would make a pair of free throws to further their lead to 66-62. Benjamin Ross would get fouled and he would make both of his free throws. With the score now 66-64, Point would take a full timeout. The Knights would turn the basketball over with eleven seconds remaining in the game and Point would take another full timeout to set their offense up. The timeout worked because RJ Selman was able to find Theron Montgomery who was able to make a layup and send the Skyhawks to overtime.

In the overtime period, Benjamin Ross would make a three-point shot after a Knights layup, would give the Skyhawks an early 69-68 lead. The Knights would call a 30 second timeout and would go on a 4-0 run to retake the lead at 72-69 with 3:26 remaining. Theron Montgomery would make one of his free throws to cut the Knights lead to one. After a Jake Smith steal, Benjamin Ross would get a layup to go and tie the game at 72-72. RJ Selman's six made free throws down the stretch would give the Skyhawks the overtime 82-77 victory.

RJ Selman led all Skyhawks with 20 points, while adding four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Selman did all of this by coming off the bench. Benjamin Ross (16 points), Jake Smith (13 points), Jack Gray (10 points) and Javier Turner (10 points) were the four of five starters that were in double-digits this evening.
