Skyhawks fall after a heartbreaking buzzer-beater from Reinhardt

WALESKA, Ga. (Jan. 31, 2023) – The Point University men's basketball team returned to action Tuesday evening for their away AAC matchup against Reinhardt and lost on a buzzer-beater 60-58. 

The Skyhawks would take a few minutes to get their scoring started on the night when Benjamin Ross would hit a three-pointer to bring Point within one point at 4-3 to start the contest. It was all Benjamin Ross with the first seven points on the night coming from him. Jake Smith would get into the mix at the 12:58 mark with his layup that would put the Skyhawks within three points at 12-9. After a steal by Benjamin Ross, he would pass up the court to Jack Gray who would get fouled. Gray would tie the game up at 17-17 after making both of his free throws. Jack Gray would make a three-pointer to give the Skyhawks their second lead of the first half at 20-17 with 7:29 remaining. The Eagles would go on a 8-0 run to take a 25-20 lead and would see their run end as RJ Selman would make one of his free throws. The end of the first half would see RJ Selman connect on a jump shot and get fouled driving through the lane on the next possession. Selman connected on both of his shots from the charity stripe to make it 27-25, in favor of the Eagles. Both teams would head to the locker room with the score at 27-25.

The Eagles extended their lead to five points after a made layup and free throw made it 30-25. Jake Smith would be the first Skyhawk to score in the second half with his jump shot to make it 30-27. The Eagles would go on a 9-0 run to give them a twelve-point lead at 39-27 at the 16:34 mark. The Skyhawks would go on a 8-0 run to cut the lead down to four points at 39-35 after a Sam Rees layup. RJ Selman would tie the contest up at 41-41 at the 12:20 mark with his made jump shot. Both teams would exchange layups until Sam Rees would connect on his three-point attempt to make it 46-43 for the Skyhawks. At the 5:13 mark, Benjamin Ross would get a layup to go and get the Skyhawks a one-point lead at 50-49. Reinhardt would take a full timeout after the lead change. The Eagles would take a two-point lead under two minutes with a dunk to make it 55-53. Benjamin Ross would make the last two baskets for the Skyhawks in the game. The first basket would tie the game up at 55-55 and the second basket would give the Skyhawks a one-point lead at 58-57 with 16 seconds remaining. The Eagles would miss a jump shot, but would get an offensive rebound and call a 30 second timeout. After the Eagles couldn't in-bound the basketball, they called a full timeout. Coming out of the full timeout, on their second try to in-bound the basketball, there would be a dead ball after the basketball would go off of a Skyhawk player with just under 1.5 seconds left on the clock. The Eagles were able to find an open shooter in three-point land to hit a buzzer-beater to give Reinhardt the 60-58 home victory as the crowd stormed the court.

 

In the box 

RJ Selman led all Skyhawks in scoring with 19 points, while adding seven rebounds and four assists. The Skyhawks also had two more players in double-digits with Benjamin Ross with 14 points and Sam Rees with 10 points.

The Skyhawks shot 35.0% (21 of 60) from the floor, 31.6% (6 of 19) from three-point land and 66.7% (10 of 15) at the charity stripe.

RJ Selman's shooting performance on the night with 14 points, puts him over 1,000 career points all time in his Skyhawks career.
