Men's basketball falls to Lions in home AAC matchup

WEST POINT, Ga. (Jan. 25, 2023) – The Point University men's basketball team returned to action Wednesday evening for their home AAC matchup against (RV) Bryan College and fell 79-74.

The Skyhawks got the scoring started with a jump shot by Jack Gray to make it 2-0. After the Lions went on a 11-0 run to take a 13-7 lead, Point would take a full timeout at the 15:02 mark in the first half. The Lions would get a jump shot to go at the 12:39 mark to make it 20-9 and would force Point to take a 30 second timeout. Benjamin Ross would thread the net with his jump shot at the 7:10 mark to make it a seven-point game at 30-23. The Skyhawks would go on a 7-0 run to come back within two points on a RJ Selman layup to make it 32-30. After two made free throws by the Lions, Jack Gray would make both of his free throws of his own to bring it to a one-point game at 38-37. Jack Gray would tie the game up at 40-40 after a Lions layup. The Lions would have a last second shot go in with the clock coming down to zero to take a three-point lead at 43-40 to the locker room at halftime.

The Lions would get two quick buckets to extend their lead to seven points at 47-40 to start the second half. The Skyhawks would go down by nine points, but Jack Gray would get his jump shot to go at the 16:50 mark to make it 50-43 score. The Lions 5-0 run would get stopped when Theron Montgomery would make a layup to keep it under ten points at 57-49. Kenton Steele would get his own rebound and the put back to make it 61-51. The Skyhawks would go on a 9-0 run to get back into the game at 67-63 with 5:07 left to play in the game. Montgomery would get a tip-in to go and make it 71-65. The Lions would call a full timeout at the 2:07 mark after Kenton Steele would come up with a three-pointer to make it 73-68. Jack Gray's jump shot would cut the Lions lead to three points at 73-70 with just under two minutes to play. After two made free throws by the Lions, Theron Montgomery would get a tip-in to make it 75-72. Justice Hayes would foul a Lion at the 1:06 mark and the Lions would connect on both shots from the charity line to make it 77-72. Hayes would foul a Lions shooter one more time, but the Lions would push the lead to 79-72. RJ Selman would get fouled on his shot with two seconds left in the game and would make it a five-point game after both of his free throws would be good. The Lions would dribble the ball out and watch the clock strike all zeros. Bryan College would take the 79-74 road victory.

In the box 

Jack Gray led all Skyhawks in shooting with his 17 points, while adding two rebounds and two assists. Other Skyhawks who finished the night in double digits were Benjamin Ross with 14 points, Kenton Steele with 14 points and Theron Montgomery with 10 points. Ross, Steele and Montgomery all scored double digits coming off the bench.

The Skyhawks shot 47.6% (30 of 63) from the floor, 23.1% (3 of 13) from three-point land and 61.1% (11 of 18) at the charity stripe.
