Skyhawks clipped in OT loss at Montreat

MONTREAT, Nc (Jan. 14, 2023) – The Point University men's basketball team returned to action Saturday evening for their AAC matchup against Montreat and fell in overtime 77-72.

The Skyhawks got the scoring started when Jack Gray made his jump shot to give the early 2-0 lead to the Skyhawks. Gray would help bring the lead back to the Skyhawks after draining both of his free throws to make it 4-3. After the Cavaliers would take a four-point lead, Jack Gray would make a three-pointer to cut the lead to 12-11 with 14:13 left in the first half. Theron Montgomery would make a layup to get the lead back at 13-12. After Jake Smith's three-pointer, would complete the 10-0 run for the Skyhawks and give them a 18-12 lead. Jake Smith's dunk would make it 20-14 and cause Montreat to take a full timeout at the 10:00 minute mark in the first half. Multiple lead changes would occur for the next few minutes and Jack Gray's three-pointer would tie the game at 27-27 at 4:25 left in the half. At the 33 second mark, Point will call a 30 second timeout with the score at 34-34. That timeout would prove perfect for the Skyhawks because they would get three points the old fashion way when Benjamin Ross would get fouled on his layup and connect on his free throw to make it 37-34. The Skyhawks would take that three-point lead into the locker room.

The Cavaliers would come out of the locker room by nailing a three-point shot to tie the game up at 37-37. Javier Turner would get fouled on his made layup and nail his free throw shot to make it 40-39. After the Cavaliers would go on a 8-0 run, Javier Turner would make a jump shot to cut the lead to five at 47-42. Theron Montgomery would make one of his free throws to bring the Skyhawks back within one-point with the score at 51-50 at the 12:06 mark. After two made free throws from Javier Turner and Jack Gray, would make it 59-57 in favor of the Cavaliers. RJ Selman would nail a three-pointer to even the score up at 63-63 with 1:38 remaining in the contest. After a made jump shot by the Cavaliers, RJ Selman would make both of his free throws to keep the contest tied at 65-65 with under one minute remaining. Both teams had opportunities to win the game, but couldn't get a shot to fall. The Skyhawks and Cavaliers would head to an overtime period to hopefully decide the contest.

The Skyhawks, Javier Turner would get his layup to fall and give the early overtime lead to the away squad at 67-65. The Cavaliers would make a three-pointer to give them the lead at 68-67. Jake Smith would get a steal and drive down the court and lay it up for the 69-68 lead with 3:52 left in the extra period. The Cavaliers would make a layup and retake the lead at 70-69. Jake Smith would go one for two at the charity stripe and the game was tied at 70-70. The Cavaliers would go on a 7-0 run to give them a 77-70 lead with 8 seconds left to play. Jake Smith would get fouled with four seconds left and make both of his free throws to make it 77-72. The Cavaliers would drive down the court and would shoot a three-pointer. The three-pointer would go in, but the referees waved the shot off because the buzzer had sounded. The final score would be 77-72 in favor of the Montreat Cavaliers.

In the box 

Jack Gray led all Skyhawks in scoring with 17 points, as well as three rebounds and a steal. Three other players finished in double digits for the Skyhawks with Javier Turner (14 points), Jake Smith (13 points), and RJ Selman (13 points).

The Skyhawks shot 31.3% (21 of 67) from the floor, 28.0% (7 of 25) from three-point land and 76.7% (23 of 30) at the charity stripe.
