Men's basketball soar past Milligan at home

WEST POINT, Ga (Jan. 7, 2023) – The Point University men's basketball team returned to action Saturday afternoon for their home AAC conference contest against Milligan and come out with a 81-69 win.

 

The Skyhawks would start off this contest hot on the offensive side by going on a 7-0 run from the opening tip-off. Justice Hayes would nail a three-pointer, assist by Jake Smith to conclude the run at the 15:52 mark in the first half. The Buffaloes would get on the board after being fouled and making both of their free throws to make it a 7-2 score. Theron Montgomery would lay it off the glass for two points and extend the early Skyhawk lead to nine points at 11-2. Benjamin Ross would make a jump shot, assist by Jake Smith to keep their lead at nine points with the score 13-4 at 12:57. RJ Selman's three-point shot, assist by Jack Gray would have the Skyhawks take over by ten points at 18-8. The Buffaloes would stay pace with the Skyhawks, working to keep the score within ten-points throughout the whole first half. After a made layup by the Buffaloes and a missed layup from Jake Smith that just rimmed out, both teams would head to the locker room with the Skyhawks leading 38-28.

 

The second half would start with an old fashion three-point play as Javier Turner would get fouled on his layup and connect on his free throw to make it a 41-28 score. The Buffaloes would go on a 8-0 run that would bring them back in the game by trailing only by five points at 45-40 at the 14:24 mark in the second half. RJ Selman would be found open to connect on a three-ball to get the Skyhawks back to an eight-point lead at 48-40. The Skyhawks offense would get hot again, going on a 9-0 run to make it 57-43, with 10:05 on the clock. The Skyhawks next run would be a 6-0 run that would end on a Skyhawk foul that would see the Buffaloes connect from the line to make it 63-47. At 3:32 the Buffaloes would make both of their free throws and get within eleven at 67-56. After a defensive rebound by Benjamin Ross, Javier Turner would give a little more life to the crowd with his dunk to make it a 76-62 Skyhawk lead with 1:02 left in the contest. The next Skyhawk basket would come from Benjamin Ross' dunk that would give him 22 points on the night. Jake Smith would get fouled with 28 seconds remaining and go to the charity stripe to drain both of his shots for the last points on the evening for the Skyhawks with the score at 81-67. The Buffaloes would get to the line one more time when they were fouled shooting a three-pointer and would connect on two of three from the line. The final score would see the Skyhawks come out victorious with the 81-69 win at home.

 

In the box 

Benjamin Ross would lead all Skyhawks in scoring with his 22 points, along with five rebounds, an assist and a steal. Three other Skyhawks would reach double digits in the contest with RJ Selman (18 points), Javier Turner (17 points) and Jake Smith 12 points. 

Javier Turner would land a double-double in this contest with his 17 points and 13 rebounds. Turner would also add 3 blocks on the evening.

The Skyhawks shot 44.8% (26 of 58) from the floor, 37.5% (6 of 16) from three-point land and 74.2% (23 of 31) at the charity stripe.
