Skyhawks dethrone the Knights at home in AAC matchup

WEST POINT, Ga. (Dec. 10, 2022) - The Point University men's basketball team returned to action Saturday evening for their Appalachian Athletic Conference home contest against St. Andrew's University and came away with a 103-60 victory on Alumni Day at West Point Park Recreation Gymnasium.

The Knights came out scoring the first basket of the game on a jump shot by Caleb Montgomery. Sam Rees would quickly tie the game up at 2-2 when he was fouled and connected on both of his free throws. The Skyhawks would go on a 9-0 run that finished up with Gentrell Taylor going 1 for 2 at the charity stripe to make it a 11-4 game with 14:03 left in the first half. We would see another offensive run by the Skyhawks, when they went on an 8-0 run to make it a 22-15 game with 7:56 left in the first half. The Knights would claw their way back into the game to be down by three off a Garrett McRae jump shot that would make it 29-26 at the 2:51 mark. The Skyhawks would again go on a 11-0 run and would finish the half on a steal by RJ Selman, who would pass it up to Jack Gray in the lane and Gray would be fouled. Jack Gray would land both of his free throw shots and send the Skyhawks to the locker room with a 40-26 lead.

The Skyhawks would see Javier Turner lay one off the glass for the first points of the second half to make it a 42-26 lead. After a Jack Gray three-pointer was good to make it 47-28, Point would take a full timeout at the 17:18 mark in the contest. Coming out of the timeout, Justice Hayes would get a steal and take it himself for a layup to go up 49-28. After a full timeout by the Knights at the 15:43 mark, the Skyhawks would sub off everyone on the court for fresh legs. This decision would see the Skyhawks go on a 13-2 run and would make it 66-32 ending with a RJ Selman layup. The Knights who were short, staffed tonight with only six players, would see the Skyhawks go on another run of 9-0, that would make it 77-37 after a three-pointer by RJ Selman, assist by Gentrell Taylor. Benjamin Ross would get a steal at the 5:01 mark and take it the length of the court for a layup and bring the score to 91-47. Gentrell Taylor would get back-to-back layups to make it a 95-47 game with 3:48 remaining. D'Andre Jefferson would make a layup after the Knights would get both free throws to go by Caleb Montgomery to make it 97-53. After a three-pointer by the Knights, Skyhawks' Theaplais Williams would make a layup to make it 99-56 with 1:25 left in the game. Williams would hear his name called again, when he would get an offensive rebound and put it back up to give the Skyhawks triple digits for the first time this season to make it 101-58. The Knights, Rafael Alvarez would get fouled and make both of his free throws to make it 101-60. D'Andre Jefferson would add the exclamation point to the contest with a dunk from an assist by Ergys Muhametaj to make it a 103-60 final. The Skyhawks are now 7-6 overall and 7-4 in the conference.

 

In the box 

Jack Gray led all Skyhawks in scoring with his 18 points, while also adding four rebounds, one assist and one block. Two other Skyhawks came in with double digit performance this evening in RJ Selman (15 points) and Gentrell Taylor (11 points).

The Skyhawks shot 50.6% (40-79) from the floor, 46.2% (12-26) from three-point land and 73.3% (11-15) at the charity stripe.
