Men's basketball victorious on the road against KCU

GRAYSON, Ky. (Dec. 3, 2022) - The Point University men's basketball team returned to action Saturday afternoon for their Appalachian Athletic Conference away contest against Kentucky Christian University and came out victorious 87-80. 

The Knights would get the scoring started with a layup after a turnover from the Skyhawks to start the game. Jack Gray would get the Skyhawks on the board with a layup and a jump shot to make it a 4-2 score. After the Knights made it a tie game at eleven at the 15:18, the Skyhawks would go on a 5-0 run to make it 16-11 at the 13:19 mark. RJ Selman would be fouled at the 12:08 mark and would sink both of his baskets to make it a 18-13 lead. The Knights would secure two free throws, but the Skyhawks would find Jack Gray in the corner for a three-pointer that would put the Skyhawks up 21-15. Both teams would exchange miss three-point opportunities and then RJ Selman would find Jack Gray open for another three-pointer to make it 24-18 Skyhawks with 9:55 to play in the first half. Sam Rees would get back-to-back three-pointers to land to extend the Skyhawks lead to 31-22. After the Knights would bring the game within three points, Justice Hayes would have his three-point shot go in to make it a six-point lead at 35-29 with 3:17 left in the first half. Jack Gray would get another three-pointer to go, from an assist by Justice Hayes to make it 40-34 at the 1:09 mark. The first half would end with Justice Hayes being fouled beyond the three-point arch to send him to the charity stripe. Hayes would go 2 for 3 at the line to send the Skyhawks to the locker room with a 42-36 lead.

The Skyhawks would see a familiar name start the scoring off for them in the second half in Jack Gray with the layup off the glass to make it 44-36. After the Knights would cut the lead to four points, Benjamin Ross would get his layup counted and make it 46-40. At the 13:28 mark, the Knights would cut the lead of the Skyhawks down to three. RJ Selman would slash through the paint and get a layup to go to make it a five-point lead for the Skyhawks at 57-52. RJ Selman would be counting on have his number called on the next two possessions. The first possession he would be fouled and would sink both free throws. The next possession would have Selman land his three-pointer to make it 62-54 with 11:49 remaining in the second half. The Knights would get the lead cut down to three, but Gentrell Taylor would make a jump shot to make it a five-point lead at 78-73. Jack Gray would have a layup go, assist by RJ Selman to make it a seven-point lead at 80-73 at the 4:11 mark. After a 5-0 run by the Knights, Javier Turner would be fouled and would connect on both of his foul shots to make it 82-78 with 1:29 to play in the second half. Gentrell Taylor would get a defensive rebound and pass it up to RJ Selman who would get fouled and sent to the foul line for two. Selman would make both shots and to extend the Skyhawks lead to 84-78 with twenty-two seconds remaining in the game. RJ Selman would find himself at the charity stripe four more times in the remaining twenty-two seconds and would go 3 for 4 to help secure the 87-80 victory for the Skyhawks.

Jack Gray led all Skyhawks in scoring with his 24 points, while also adding two rebounds. RJ Selman (23 points) and Sam Rees (11 points) would finish the game in double digits with both coming off the bench. RJ Selman was also 11 for 12 from the charity stripe.

The Skyhawks shot 48.2% (27-56) from the floor, 47.6% (10-21) from three-point land and 65.7.% (23-35) at the charity stripe.
