John Tyler is entering his seventh season as head coach of the Point baseball program. Tyler graduated from Point University in December 2010, with a degree in Business, and joined the Skyhawks’ coaching staff in the spring of 2011.

Under Tyler’s leadership, the Skyhawks have become one of the top contenders in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. Tyler was named AAC Coach of the Year during his first season as head coach after tying for the regular-season AAC title and posting 33 victories.

In his second year at the program's helm, the baseball program set a school record with 37 wins. The Skyhawks entered the AAC tournament as the No. 4 seed and defeated No. 5 Truett-McConnell in game one (1-0), before falling to nationally ranked Bryan 3-1. Point worked their way out of the loser’s bracket and went on to win the next four games of the tournament, defeating Truett-McConnell 8-3, then defeating Bryan twice (5-1, 7-4) to make it to the championship game and defeat nationally ranked and AAC regular-season champions, Tennessee Wesleyan to earn a trip to the NAIA National Championship. This was Point’s first-ever conference tournament championship. The Skyhawks added three more wins in five games in the NAIA National Championships Opening Round, losing in a second-round game and the championship game to bracket champion Georgia Gwinnett.

During his third season as head coach, the Skyhawks finished the season 30-23, and during the shortened 2020 season, the baseball program finished 13-4.

2021: 25-21 overall record. Tyler had three program members earn All-Conference recognition, with Jakobe Smith earning the first national player of the week honors in program history. Dillon Brown earned the program's first honoree on the ABCA-Rawlings Gold Glove team.

2022: Point finished the regular season 25-20 and 20-10 in AAC play. The Skyhawks were the No. 3 seed going into the conference tournament. Three members were recognized on the All-AAC team.

2023: Point finished the regular season 22-22-1 and 14-15 in AAC Play. The Skyhawks fell to CIU in the play-in game at the Conference tournament. Three members were recognized on the All-Conference teams for the AAC.

In his first season of joining the coaching staff as an assistant, Tyler helped guide the Skyhawks to their first NCCAA II National Championship in school history, and in 2016, he helped guide Point into its first-ever NAIA World Series appearance after it won the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round (Savannah bracket) and placed second behind Tennessee Wesleyan in the AAC Tournament.

Tyler played two seasons of junior college baseball in Washington State before transferring to Point University, where he played his final two seasons.

John and his wife, Jennifer, who has coached the Point softball team since 2012, have one daughter.
