Point University Skyhawks Move to a 1-3 Record After the Season Opener Against Ave Maria

AVE MARIA, Fla. (Jan. 24-25, 2025) - The Point University Baseball team took a trip to Florida for a non-conference matchup with Ave Maria University. On Friday, January 24th, Point competed in a doubleheader where the Skyhawks fell to the Gyrenes with scores of 1-0 and 13-2. On the following day, the Skyhawks continued their weekend with another doubleheader that featured a loss of 11-4 and a win of 5-2. 

Game one (1-0, Loss)

The Skyhawks faced a tough start to their regular season with a narrow loss against the Ave Maria Gyrenes. The final scoreboard read 1-0 in favor of the Gyrenes on January 24, 2025.

Despite strong pitching, Point couldn't capitalize on their plays. The Skyhawks' starting pitcher, Max Beaulieu, put in a commendable effort but Ave Maria managed to score the only run through a home run in the second inning, which secured the win for the Gyrenes. 

Game Two (13-2, Loss)

The Skyhawks and the Gyrenes continued their second game on Friday, but Point was overpowered by the Gyrenes with a final score of 13-2 in favor of Ave Maria.

Point University saw contributions from Keegan Moore and Arwin Burgos, who each scored a run. Despite efforts to rally, only Jackson Divido and Jaden Mazzaferro managed to drive in runs, each earning an RBI. Starting pitcher Daniel Crabtree faced a tough lineup from Ave Maria, which has started their season strongly, now standing at 2-0, contrasting Point University's struggle with a 0-2 record so far.

Game Three (11-4, Loss)

On Saturday, January 25, 2025, Point University's Skyhawks faced a tough challenge against Ave Maria University's Gyrenes at Bowie's Ballpark. The Skyhawks could unfortunately not clinch the victory, falling 11-4 to the Gyrenes.

Despite the discouraging outcome, several Skyhawks players had notable performances. Zavion Anderson, Rafael Jackson, Daniel Gonzalez, and Arwin Burgos all crossed home plate, contributing to Point University's total of four runs. Rafael Jackson, Daniel Gonzalez, and Jaden Mazzaferro each earned an RBI, showcasing their efforts to push the team forward. Joshua Castillo took the mound as the starting pitcher for the Skyhawks in this outing.

Game 4 (5-2, Win)

The Skyhawks showing strong performance in this non-conference game, secured a convincing 5-2 victory against the Ave Maria Gyrenes at Bowie's Ballpark.

Houston Wedgeworth, starting pitcher for the Skyhawks, played a pivotal role in keeping the Gyrenes at bay throughout the game. The scoring for Point University was a collective effort, with Zavion Anderson, Daniel Gonzalez, Rafael Jackson, Brady Bye, and Sam Baker each crossing the plate. Notably, Michael Buckley's impressive double resulted in two runs, sparking a significant 5-run inning that ultimately cemented the win for Point University.

RBI contributions came from Zavion Anderson and Michael Buckley, who both added two RBIs, and Rafael Jackson with one. These key plays contributed largely to the Skyhawks' strategic win over the Gyrenes.
