Point Baseball tames the Tigers in weekend series sweep

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (Apr. 13, 2024) - The Point University Baseball team returned to the field for a Southern States Athletic Conference weekend series against Stillman College where the Skyhawks took the sweep in the three-game series. 

Game One (13-11, Win) 

Point opened with the game's first run as Stillman's wild pitch saw Daniel Gonzalez take advantage and advance home. In the bottom of the first inning, The Tigers responded to Point to tie the game at 1-1. Stillman took the lead with a double to right field to see the Tiger speed bring their lead to 2-1. The Skyhawks remained calm with Alex Marquand's RBI single past first base helping Jaysen Dower score the first run in the top of the third. Rafael Jackson doubled down the left field line which saw the wheels of Silas Butler and Hunter Neumayer add two runs to regain the lead. An error by the third baseman helped Mason Davis reach first and Rafael Jackson advanced home to bring the score to 5-2. In the bottom of the third, the Tigers added an RBI single to left field for their third run. Point added four more runs in the top of the fourth as Jaysen Dower, Hunter Neumayer, Silas Butler, Zeb Baird, and Mason Davis each scored on runs. Point's lead grew with Alex Marquand doubling to right field which helped Slade Mink sprint home to bring the score to 10-3. The Tigers climbed back by adding seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game to give them a fighting chance. The Skyhawks extended their lead with an error by the pitcher from Stillman which helped Silas Butler score a run. The Tigers added one run in the bottom of the inning but could not surpass the Skyhawks, bringing the game to a final score of 13-11. Cameron Seiwert made the start on the mound and earned the win.  

Game Two (18-5, Win) 

The Skyhawks opened Game Two with Slade Mink adding a triple to right field which saw Daniel Gonzalez give the Skyhawks their first run. Alex Marquand followed with a single up the middle to give the Skyhawks a two-run lead. In the top of the third inning, Jaysen Dower and Slade Mink opened the top of the third inning two runs to start their momentum for the inning. A two-RBI double by Rafael Jackson as Silas Butler and Hunter Neumayer were able to sprint. The Skyhawks finished the inning with eight runs as Mason Davis and Daniel Gonzalez scored the final two runs in the inning. The Tigers added a triple to center field which helped cut into Point's lead with a score of 10-1. Point added two more runs in the top of the fourth with an RBI single from Daniel Gonzalez. Justin Robinson made his moment count with a grand slam homer to increase the lead to 17-1 over the Tigers. Game Two wrapped up with Point adding one last run and the Tigers adding four more runs to bring the final score to 18-5. Julio Lopez started on the mound and picked up the win. 

Game Three (15-13, Win) 

The action picked up in the top of the second inning with Mason Davis adding a single to right center which added two runs to take the lead. Daniel Gonzalez singled through the left side as Mason Davis reached home plate for a three-run lead. Sam Baker's speed was enough to beat the throw at home plate to end the inning with a 4-0 lead. Stillman opened with a two-run homer and followed with tying the game with a throwing error from Point along with an RBI single. Mason Davis entered the top of the third inning contributing with a sacrifice fly to send Silas Butler home for another run. In the bottom of the inning, the Tigers took the lead by adding three runs to bring the score to 7-5. Three hits from Zeb Baird, Daniel Gonzalez, and Hunter Neumayer helped Point regain the lead with a score of 9-7. A wild pitch from the Tigers helped Brett Campbell extend the lead with another run. Rafael Jackson capped off the inning with a three-RBI double to bring home Alex Marquand, Slade Mink, and Silas Butler. With Point leading 13-7, Stillman followed with five runs in two innings to get the game to a nail-biting 13-12. Point finished by adding two runs while only giving up one more run to win the series in a sweep. Maxime Beaulieu made the start on the mound and collected the win. Sage McWaters made the save to finish the game.

The Skyhawks will turn their focus to the weekend of April 19-20th for their final home SSAC weekend series against Brewton-Parker which will be Senior Day for the Saturday game.
