Point Baseball wins road SSAC series at Loyola

NEW ORLEANS, La. (Feb. 24, 2024) - The Point University Baseball traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana for a Southern States Athletic Conference weekend series with Loyola University-New Orleans where the Skyhawks swept the day on Friday with a 7-5 and a 6-2 win. The following day, Loyola prevailed in a slugfest to move past the Skyhawks with a final score of 12-11. The Skyhawks would ultimately win the series over the Wolfpack 2-1. 

Game One (7-5, Win) 

Loyola opened the first inning with a two-run homer to open the game leading 2-0. The Skyhawks responded quickly with a duplicate play as Mason Davis added his second home run on the week which scored him and Zeb Baird to tie the game 2-2. The Wolfpack regained the lead with a single to right field which scored two runners home to lead 4-2. The Skyhawks continued to match the intensity of Loyola as Point opened the fourth inning with Slade Mink adding a single to the shortstop. Zeb Baird followed with a two-run homer to bring the game tied at four. The Wolfpack added their fifth run with a runner stealing home but the Skyhawks regained composure to up the ante. A scored run from Hunter Neumayer and a Sam Baker triple scored home Jeremiah Martin to end the game with the Skyhawks winning 7-5. 

Game Two (6-2, Win) 

The action picked up in the fourth inning with Jaden Mazzaferro leading off with a single to left field. Rafael Jackson followed with a single up the middle which added two runners on base. A hit by pitch added Zeb Baird on base and loaded the bases. Point took the lead with a runner advancing home from the walk. With bases loaded again, a second run was scored by Rafael Jackson as Daniel Gonzalez was hit by a pitch to end the inning with a 2-0 lead. The Skyhawks extended their lead with a single to right field from Jaden Mazzaferro which scored Mason Davis. Zeb Baird stepped to the plate and smacked a double down the left-field line to score Rafael Jackson to bring the lead to 6-0. Loyola would add two runs to finish the game but would be unable to surpass the Skyhawks to end the game with a final score of 6-2. 

Game Three (12-11, Loss) 

The Skyhawks opened with Jaden Mazzaferro leading off with a single to left center to get on base. Slade Mink followed with a single to field to add their second hit and put two runners on. Alex Marquand was in the right place at the right time as he singled to second base which advanced Jaden Mazzaferro for the first run of Game Three. The Wolfpack followed with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead with a score of 3-1. Loyola's lead grew to three as the Wolfpack added a sacrifice fly to score a runner home. Point did not shy away from competition as Slade Mink added a two-run homer to score him and Rafael Jackson home. Loyola followed with three runs in two innings to push their lead to 7-3. The Skyhawks added two runs in the fifth inning as Zeb Baird and Hunter Neumayer scored the following runs. Point continued to climb their way back as Rafael Jackson brought the game within one run with Jackson adding a two-run homer. With bases loaded, the Skyhawks tied the game at eight as Mason Davis scored on a game-tying run. The Wolfpack regained the lead by adding four runs in the seventh inning to bring their lead to 12-8. Point returned to bat in the eighth inning with a home run from Alex Marquand which scored him and Zeb Baird home. Point looked the take the game away but was unable to add another run to drop the game 12-11.

The Point University Baseball team will return to action for a midweek non-conference game against former Appalachian Athletic Conference foe, Reinhardt University starting at 3:00 P.M.
