Kaleb Podger's 3-Run HR in Game 2, lifts Skyhawks to series win against #19 Bryan College

WEST POINT, Ga. (March 18, 2023) – The Point University baseball team played Game 2 and 3 of the three game AAC conference series against #19 Bryan College would split the day by losing Game 2, 12-5 and winning Game 3, 6-3. The Skyhawks would take the series win after winning Game 1 and 3.

 

Game 2 – 12-5 LOSS

The Lions would open Game 2 with a 5-0 lead after their first three at bats. The Skyhawks would get their first run in the bottom of the third when Alex Marquand would reach by fielder's choice and score Jackson Bush to make it 5-1. Later in the inning, Jhamante Woods would single to center field to score Gavin Shaw to make it 5-2. The Lions would add one run in the fourth and three runs in the fifth to make it 9-2. The bottom of the fifth, the Skyhawks would get a 3-run bomb by Jhamante Woods to cut the Lions lead to 9-5. The Lions would add three more runs in the top of the seventh to make it a 12-5 game. Neither team would score in the last two innings and the Lions would come away with the Game 2 victory, 12-5.

Game 3 – 6-3 WIN

The rubber match was an exciting one as Kaleb Podger would reach first on an error by the Lions shortstop that would cause Jackson Bush to score to make it a 1-0 lead for the Skyhawks in the first inning. The Skyhawks would add one more run in the bottom of the fourth on a ground out RBI by Jaysen Dower to score Gavin Shaw to make it 2-0. In the top of the fifth, the Lions would score a run on a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1. The starting pitcher for the Skyhawks, Cameron Seiwert would exit the game after throwing 4.1 innings, allowing one earned run on one hit, walking four and striking out six batters. Chandler Griggs would come in with a runner on third base and get out of the fifth inning. The offense would came alive on the bat of Kaleb Podger when he would hit a three-run homer to make it a 5-1 game. Later in the inning, Zeb Baird would walk and Slade Mink would come home safely on a passed ball to make it 6-1. The Skyhawks would go to the bullpen and have Cale Whigham pitch the sixth inning. Whigham would allow one earned run on one hit and walk one batter in the sixth to make it a 6-2 game. After the Skyhawks were unable to add anymore runs in the bottom of the sixth, they sent Daniel Crabtree to the mound for the seventh. Crabtree would finish the game allowing one earned run on three hits and walking one. The Skyhawks would hold on to get the Game 3 win, 6-3 and win the AAC series. This is the Skyhawks third AAC conference series win this season.

Next Game

The baseball team will head on the road to Grayson, KY to take on Kentucky Christian University in a three game AAC conference series. Game 1 will be Friday, March 24 with the first pitch scheduled for 12:00 P.M. and Game 2 will be approximately 30 minutes after the last out of Game 1. Game 3 will be on Saturday, March 25 with the first pitch scheduled for 12:00 P.M.
