Skyhawks drop two, lose AAC series on the road at TMU

CLEVELAND, Ga. (March 11, 2023) – The Point University baseball team played Games 2 and 3 of their AAC conference series on the road against Truett-McConnell and would lose both games by scores of 13-9 (Game 2) and 7-6 (Game 3). The Bears of Truett-McConnell would sweep the Skyhawks this weekend.

 

Game 2 – 13-9 LOSS

The Bears would jump on the Skyhawks early with seven runs in the first two innings to take the early 7-0 lead. The Skyhawks would score four runs in the top of the third. The scoring would get started with an RBI sacrifice fly to left field by Kaleb Podger to score Jackson Bush. Zeb Baird would single to right field to score JR Curley. After the Skyhawks would load the bases on a Noah Watkins walk, Jaysen Dower would walk and score Slade Mink. The last of the four runs would come when Trent Sheppard would hit a sacrifice fly to right field that would score Zeb Baird making it a 7-4 game. The top of the fourth would see the Skyhawks score three more runs to take a lead. Slade Mink would single to center field to score JR Bush. Noah Watkins would triple to center field to score both Zeb Baird and Slade Mink. After the triple, Noah Watkins would score on a passed ball to give the Skyhawks an 8-7 lead. The Bears would three runs in the fourth and three runs in the sixth to take a 13-8 lead. The Skyhawks would get one run back off a solo home run by Alex Marquand to make it a 13-9 game. The Bears would hold on in the ninth to take the series and win game 2, 13-9.

 

Offensive Leaders (Multi Hit game)

Slade Mink – 2 for 3; 2R, RBI

Zeb Baird – 2 for 5; 2R, RBI

Trent Sheppard – 2 for 3; RBI, BB

 

On the Mound

Carson Curry would get the Game 1 start and go 1.1 innings pitched, giving up seven runs on eight hits and walking three batters. Curry would eventually get the loss in the contest. Daniel Crabtree would come in relief and throw 4.1 innings. Crabtree would give up six runs on six hits, walking four and striking out four batters. Salter Greene would throw in relief after Crabtree for 2.1 innings pitched, giving up no runs, while only scattering two hits.

 

Game 3 – 7-6 LOSS

The Skyhawks would get two runs in the second inning starting when Zeb Baird would score on an error to make it 1-0. Jaysen Dower would double to left field to score Chase Tolbert to make it 2-0. The Bears would score one run in the second to make it a 2-1 game. Kaleb Podger would add one run in the third on an error by the right fielder to make it 3-1. The Bears would get another run in the bottom of the third to make it 3-2 game.  In the top of the fifth, Sam Baker would score on a pass ball to make it 4-2. Slade Mink would single to score Jackson Bush to make it 5-2. Kaleb Podger would score to make it 6-2. The Bears would get three runs in the fifth on a two-run homer and a solo homer to make it a 6-5 game. The Bears would score two runs in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double and an error to take a 7-6 lead. The Bears would hold on in the top of the seventh to take the sweep and Game 3 win, 7-6.

On the Mound

Cole Brown would get the Game 3 start going five innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits, walking two and striking out eight batters. Cale Whigham would come out of the bullpen for 0.2 innings allowing one earned run on one hit and walking two. Chandler Griggs would come in after Whigham to finish the bottom of the sixth

 

Next Game

The baseball team will play at home on Tuesday evening against #25 Faulkner, with the first pitch scheduled for 5:00 P.M.
