Skyhawks battle but fall to Faulkner in five sets 

WEST POINT, Ga. (Sept. 8, 2021) — The Point University volleyball team hosted Faulkner University Tuesday night inside West Point Park Gymnasium and fell to the Eagles after a five set battle. 

Set-by-set

Point came out on top in the first set, having to go past regulation end to win 28-26. Both teams were back-and-forth the entire set, but a kill by Mollie Goen and an attack error from Faulkner gave Point an early 1-0 lead.

Faulkner answered in the second and third sets, winning the second set 25-19 and the third set 25-15 to go ahead 2-1.

The Skyhawks evened the match up 2-2, winning the fourth set 25-23. The Skyhawks led 24-19, but the Eagles scored the next four points to bring the score within one. A kill by Kelsey Turner would help take the match into the fifth set. The Skyhawks looked to carry the momentum over, scoring the first two points of the final set, but Faulkner quickly jumped ahead 9-4 and held onto the lead for the remainder of the set, winning 15-9.

In the box

Three Skyhawks recorded double-digit kills and five recorded double-digit digs. Te'a Owens led the way with a double-double, recording a team-high of 17 kills and 19 digs. Sarah Baucham followed with 12 kills, and Whitney Ward recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs.

Kaitlyn Hawke was the third Skyhawk to record a double-double with 31 assists and 11 digs. Audrey Blaschke and Madison Bentley rounded out the Skyhawks' defensive front with 15 and 14 digs, respectively, and Abby Solomon helped anchor the offense with 13 assists. Goen recorded a team-high of five blocks.

Point will turn its attention to Appalachian Athletic Conference play as they host in-state rivals, Reinhardt, tomorrow, Thursday, Sept. 9. Game time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. with JV playing before at 4:30 p.m.
