Volleyball goes 0-3 over Labor Day weekend

WEST POINT, Ga. (Sept. 4, 2021) – The Point University volleyball team competed in three matches over Labor Day weekend. First, the Skyhawks traveled to Brunswick, Georgia, on Friday to compete in the Captain Jack Volleyball Quad before returning to West Point to host Keiser Saturday night, in Point's first home match of the season. On Friday, the Skyhawks fell 3-0 in both of their matches and fell to the Seahawks 3-1 on Saturday.

Friday's tournament

The Skyhawks' first match was against host school Coastal Georgia who defeated Point, 25-14, 25-14, 25-16. Coastal Georgia outkilled Point 42-14. The Mariners have yet to lose a match this season.

Point's second match of the day was a nonconference matchup against Appalachian Athletic Conference opponent Bryan. The Skyhawks fell to the Lions in three straight sets, 25-16, 25-11, 25-19. Bryan finished set one with a 10-1 run to gain momentum, which they carried over into the second set, taking the lead on the initial play and never losing it. Both teams battled it out in the third set, with Point taking an early 2-0 lead before Bryan answered to go ahead 4-2. Ahead by one, the Lions would go on a 6-2 run to gain some distance and hold onto the lead for the remainder of the set.

Sameily Marquez led Point with five kills and Madison Bentley recorded seven digs.

Saturday vs. Keiser (21-25, 13-25, 26-24, 25-21)

The Skyhawks followed Friday's tournament by hosting Keiser in their first home match of the season. Point dropped the first two sets before making a comeback in the third set, defeating the Seahawks 26-24 to force the fourth set. The Skyhawks led 23-17 in the third set before Keiser scored the next five points to bring the score within one. A kill by Whitney Ward extended Point's lead back out to two, but Keiser followed with a kill of their own to bring the score back within one and a Point error tied the game at 24. A service error by the Seahawks followed by a kill from Kelsey Turner helped the Skyhawks avoid the sweep.

Both teams were back-and-forth in the fourth set, with a kill by Owens tying the score at 16 all, but a kill by Keiser's Ryelle Cox gave Keiser the lead, and the Seahawks would hold onto it for the rest of the match.

Keiser outkilled Point 60 to 46. Owens and Mollie Goen each recorded double-digit kills with 15 and 11, respectively. Sarah Baucham followed with nine. Kaitlyn Hawke recorded 32 assists and Whitney Ward led the defense with 15 digs.
