Shooting Woes Doom Women's Basketball Against Point

Athens, Tenn.- The women's basketball played their second to last home game of the year 2022 on Wednesday. The team hosted the Point University Lady Skyhawks in an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) game.

TWU rebounded from a 6-1 deficit to a 7-6 lead in the opening minutes of the first quarter. Jacelyn Stone, Mikalee Martin, CAmbree Mayo, and Jordan Wright all scored to help the team take the lead. Yeika Jimenez Diaz made the team's advantage 9-8 before seven straight points by Point gave the opponents a 15-9 lead. Alexis Bates gave the team two more points but the Lady Bulldogs went into the second quarter trailing 17-11.

Mayo opened the second quarter with a jump shot and a few moments later, Wright knocked down a three-point jumper to make the score 21-16 in favor of the opponents. Stone cut the deficit to three points with her layup. The offense for Tennessee Wesleyan went cold as Point ended the second quarter on a 12-2 scoring run to take a 33-20 lead into the halftime break. Anna Crowder scored for the team during the Point scoring rally.

The offensive struggle for the Lady Bulldogs continued into the third quarter. The opponents scored the first six points to move their lead to 39-20. Crowder broke the scoring drought with her jumper and a jumper by Diaz made the score 43-24 in favor of Point. A three-pointer by Abbey Barr and a pair of free throws by Wright made the score 45-30 at the end of the third quarter.

Four points by Stone helped the team move what at one point was a 21-point deficit earlier in the game down to 13 points a minute into the fourth quarter. The team was able to get the lead down to 12 points on a couple of occasions but was not able to pull closer. Point went on to win the game 64-48.

Wright led the team with nine points while Crowder led on the boards with ten rebounds.

TWU (5-3, 3-3) go on the road for their next AAC game. The team will make the trip to Bluefield University on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. tip.
