Firehawks Split Conference Twin Bill with Skyhawks

PULASKI, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern baseball team got their first conference win in a doubleheader split with Point on Saturday. UTS took game one 2-1 and fell in a late inning comeback rally 10-7.

GAME ONE

UT Southern (4-12, 1-3) scored the first and the fourth, while Point (11-6, 3-4) scored their only run of the game in the second.

Landon Rogers scored on a misthrow back to the pitcher in the First. UTS led 1-0 after one.

Point added their run in the second to draw even at one.

In the fourth, Rhett Birdsong hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Kevin McCarthy. UTS led 2-1 after four.

Tray Lacy (3-0) tossed 6.1 innings allowing one unearned run on three hits. Josh Simmons picked up his third save of the year recording the final two outs.

GAME TWO

Point (12-6, 4-4) scored in the third, fourth and sixth to jump out to 9-0 heading to the bottom of the sixth. UT Southern (4-13, 1-4) got a pair of runs back in the sixth. Rogers blasted a two-run homer to center that scored Ty Garrett. UTS trailed 9-2.

Point added another run on a deep fly over the wall in the seventh.

The Firehawks being down to their final three outs began a rally to extend the game or win in the ninth. McCarthy singled down the right field line driving in Grayson Willis and Blake Birdsong. Zach Hayes singled to third base scoring Devin Buckhalter. Rogers doubled down the left field line driving in McCarthy and Justin Beachler. UTS scored five in the final frame.

Griffin Sahli (0-1) took the loss allowing three runs on three hits. Ridge Raper tossed the fourth giving up four runs on two hits. Weston Horton 1.2 innings giving up two earned runs. Cody Edwards hurled the final 3.1 innings allowing one earned run. Sahli and Edwards both recorded four strikeouts each.

The Firehawks will conclude the weekend series with Point tomorrow at Bobby Walker Field at noon.
